week and while here also visited in
Thrall and San Antonio, Texas and
in Lake Charles, La., with his
brother Rae Parnell.

day for Baltimore, Maryland, where
he is to take extra training. He had
the honor of being one of only two,
chosen from Camp Bowie, to receive

ed over the week-end with their
mother, Mrs. Oscar D. Johnson, and
sister, Miss Florence'.
Dr. and Mrs. Dale Wood and Mrs.
Flora Fuller were week-end visitors
visitors with their parents, Dr. and
Mrs. W. E. Campbell, to greet their
sister, Mrs. R. W. Murphy, and two
little daughters, of Benavides. Ed-
ward Campbell is, at present, as-
sociated with an electrical supply
company in Houston but after six
weeks will go to New York where
he will train with General Electric
Company.

day in Abilene guests of Mr. and
Mrs. A. E. Johnson Jr., and little

Dr. and Mrs. Wilton E. Wood and
Janet of Austin were Sunday visit-
ors to Elgin.
Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Carter Jr.,
Janie Marie and Robert were Sunday
visitors to Elgin, guests of Mr. and
Mrs. R. L. Carter.

Friends of Mrs. M. V. Winters
will, be glad to learn she was able
to be moved from Fleming hospital
to her home Tuesday after a seven
day’s stay, during which she under-
day’s stay, and is convalescing nicely.
Mr. J. C. Miller Sr. is ill and con-
bridge over Cottonwood Creek near
Brown’s Gin on Taylor highway, and
fell 15 feet to the bed of the creek.
Julius Kastner, who was with him,
also suffered painful injurier, and is
still confined to his bed.
Jack Brummet of Littig visited
over the week-end with his parents,

Brummet’s mother, Mrs. W. H.
Truitt, of McDuff, who will celebrate
her 82nd birthday in March, was a
recent guest in the Brummet home,
to be near her physician during an
illness. Friends will be glad to learn
she is improving nicely now.
Mr. and Mrs. Claude Davis and
daughter, Doris Nell, of Columbus,
passed through Elgin Tuesday en-
route home from Dallas, and visited
briefly with Mr. and Mrs. A. C.
Brown. Friends of Doris Nell will
be glad to learn she has shown mark-
ed improvement in health during the
past three months.
Mr. W. A. Pate, 87 years of age,
who has been living in Oklahoma
for 44 years, will become a reader
of The Elgin Courier this week-end.
Deciding he would like to “keep up”
with his friends and Elgin through
this medium he sent his subscription
in a letter to his brother, Mr. George
Pate, a subscriber for many years,
who promptly turned it in to this
office.
Mr. Kinley Culberson of Jackson,
Tenn., arrived Friday to attend the
American Legion Past Commander’s
Mr. and Mrs. Darby Parr, of
Corpus Christi, spent the week-end
visiting in the homes of Mr. and Mrs.
Ozie Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Parr
and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Arbuckle.

Bill Coleman, of Kerrville, both
students in Baylor University, Waco,
were week-end visitors of the for-
mer’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. P.
Culp Jr.
Mesdames Will Condron and Paul
Williams attended an all-day meet-
ing in Central Christian Church, in
Austin, Monday. They were accom-
panied by Mr. and Mrs. W. H. ‘Car-
ter, Billie Williams and Linda Jones,
who visited with Mr. and Mrs.
Paige Benbow.
Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Jones of Aus-
tin were guests Sunday in the home
of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Condron.

J. J. Brooks returned last Wednes-
day from Alto, Texas, where he was
called the week before by the grave
illness of his father, Mr. R. M.
Brooks, and was with him when he
passed on. The many friends of Mr.
Brooks will regret to learn of his
bereavement.
Guests in the John M. Puckett
home during the week-end were Mrs.
Puckett’s brothers, Victor H. Bryan
of Houston and E. G. Bryan, of Sher-
man, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Puckett of Austin, but formerly of
the Valley.
Mrs. R. W. Murphy and little
daughters returned to their home in
Benavides Monday, following a
pleasant visit with homefolk. They
were accompanied home by Mrs.
Murphy’s sister, Miss Florence Camp-
bell, for a visit.
Elgin friends of Mr. E. A. Clous-
nitzer, former resident of this place,
now of New Braunfels, will regret
to learn of his death, which occurred
there Friday. Funeral services were
held Sunday in New Braunfels, from
the Methodist Church.

Vernon Barker, Charlie Ballard, of
Elgin, Winston Pace, McDade and
Bill Watson of Bastrop, all of Camp
Bowie, Brownwood, were visitors at
fhe week-end with their respective
homefolk. Jack is busy this week
helping to transport a company of
soldiers from a camp in Oklahoma
to Abilene, Texas.

The 7th graders', both sections,
and their sponsors, were delight-
fully entertained last Thursday
evening at the Legion Hall with Mrs.
Pat Webb of Bastrop and Mrs. C.
W. Webb of Elgin as joint hostesses.
Pat is president of Section-A of
the class and his mother took this
means of complimenting his fellow
class members. Three hours full of
games of various kinds', and numer-
ous folk-dances, under the direction
of the hostesses, assisted by the
class sponsors), Mrs. Harrison and
Miss Nell Owens, were engaged in.
Refreshments of (generous help-
ings of grape punch, sandwiches,
cookies, and candies helped make
the evening most enjoyable to all.

SILOAM, Feb. 25 — My, we are
having some more real cold winter
weather, with a soaking rain with
it. This will make farmers late
planting their corn. Some have al-
ready planted Irish potatoes and
gardens.
Quite a few young people gather-
ed at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Stone last Friday night and
all went out fox hunting and about
9 o’clock they roasted weiners and
marshmallows. Little Kenneth
Ralph Stone had a fine time build-
ing fires and roasting weiners.
Mrs. Tom Dildy and Ray Stone of
Austin visited Mr. Clyde Stone and
Miss Marie Saturday night and Sun-
day.
Mr. Vernon Rister of Granger
visited his sister and husband, Mr.
and Mrs. H. T. Ward Jr., last Thurs-
day.
Those who spent Sunday with Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph Stone, were Wr. and
Mrs. H. T. Ward Jr., Miss Christine
Ward and Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Stone.
