In a letter of late date, addressed
to Representative A. M. Kennedy,
Attorney General C. K. Bell says?
"I have your letter in which you
inclose a copy of senate joint reso-
lution No. 1, providing for the ap-
pointment of a joint committee to
investigate the various departments
of the state government, etc. You
ask if the presiding officers of the
senate anl house can appoint the
members of said committee during
vacation, and in reply I beg to ad-
vise you that I know of no reason
why the appointments could not be
made during vacation if made at
all, because the phesent resolution
has not become effective, as I am
advised.”_________________
Skat Congress.
The anual Skat congress met at
the Turnverien park, half a mile
east of Bellville, eighty-eight play-
ers being present. Brenham, La-
Grange, Sealy, Houston, Industry,
New Ulm and other places were
well represented. Dr. K. N. Mil-
ler of Houston won first prize, a
gold-headed cane. Other prizes
were won by Charles Rosenberg of
LaGrange, E. Harigel of Bellville,
Ben Blair of Bellville, Pomp Mor-
ris of Sealy, William Blumenthal
and A. Helmuth of Bellville. Bar-
becued meats were served. The
next annual skat tournament will
be held at Brenham.
Sought Suicide.
Wong Hong, an insane China-
man, who was confined in the
county jail at El Paso nearly a
week, almost succeeded in hanging
himself by attaching his handker-
chief to the bars of his cell and
suspending himself by the neck.
When discovered and cut down by a
jail guard life was almost extinct.
The Chinaman believes himself
pursued by highbinders.
A runaway electric car ran into a
train at Burlington. la., smashing
the former into kindling wood. Mrs.
Charlie Keefer was killed and sev-
eral other ersons sustained serious
injuries by the collision.
Dr. Henry Whitehorn, one of the
best known instructors of Greek in
the country, is dead, aged 86
years. He was an intimate friend
of Jefferson Davis. Dr. White-
horn taught in many colleges.
Served With Davis.
Maj. W. E. Estes and wife of
Texarkana were in Dallas visiting
the fair. They departed for Fort
Worth, where they visited friends.
Maj. Estes served under Col. Jef-
ferson Davis in the war with
Mexico and was wounded at Buena
Vista, was placed on Col. Davis’
horse and carried from the field of
action. Despite his years, he is as
straight and erect as a Comanche
brave, and his eye is as bright as in
the days when he was a sergeant of
the Rifles commanded by the fa-
mous soldier and statesman, who
afterward became president of the
Southern Confederacy.

very remarkable cures of partial

the use of this liniment. It is
most widely known however, as
