Death Sentence
of Jackson Upheld
AUSTIN, June 17—The court of
criminal appeals today affirmed the
death sentence of Alfred Jackson,
convicted of the murder of Mrs
Elisa Pinson, in Bexar county.
The court denied ball to Dewey
Hunt, alleged Dallas county killer,
who was assessed the death pen-
alty but whose case was reversed
and remanded by the appellate
court Dec. 18. 1920 Hunt had not
been tried a second lime.
The woman was slain April 12.
1930. When two bullets from a re-
volver pierced her body while she
was hanging out the family wash-
ing in he? back yard.
Jackson, a roomer at Mrs. Pin-
son's house, claimed he had trou-
ble with Mrs. Pinson's son and that
he was carrying the revolver in an-
ticipition of an attack. Rounding
the corner of the house, he stum-
bled over a garden hose and the
gun was accidentally discharged, he
testified.
Fall is at El Paso, Texas, await-

ernment physicians to determire

No Two Things Similar
Forensic ballistics, or the appli-
cation of ballistic knowledge to
questions in dispute at law, is, in
its most important applications,
much more of an art than a science.
Its value rests upon the readily es-
tablished fact that no two similar
things, whether large or small, man
made or naturally created, are iden-
tical down to their last microscopic
details if this holds for firearms.,
as it 'does, and provided every
weapon transmits certain markings
to bullets or shells which it fires,
which it does, these markings
should be characteristic of that
particular arm, and differ alightlv,
or materially, from those imparted
by any other arm, whether of the
same or different makes.
Must Know Markings
But knowledge that this fict
exists is far from being sufficient
to make us experts in the field. We
must know what markings are left
on bullets as they pass through a
barrel, and why; how and why
these differ from markings left by
other barrels of the same and un-
ike makes; and how and why even
two bullets fired in succession thru
the same barrel will manifest cer-
tain variations one from the oth-
er. ordinarily slight, but sometimes
quite marked
To acquire this knowledge we

nique of firearm and cartricga

As evidence of their desire for

the carriers recommended that the

application .be of a "limited char-
