Cotton had rather an easier opening
today, ' notwithatanding that Liver-

First trades here showed ioMes of 4
points and prices continued to ease
after the start, due to a continued
reactionary feeling attributed to the
otmUnued good weather Jn the belt,
the heavy ginnings and 'fears that
the government might further raise
its estimate of the crop
These considerations caused fur.

ing ir the gay sunlight, sombre in
the futile spring rain But there is
mostly sunshine a soft powdering of
sifted gold
it was lovely that first week in
Parts Down the years it stayed in
Venice's memory, a carefree seven
days of fascinating shops rich foods,
occasional cocktalls and' no contacts
that caused her embarrassment or the
exertion of summoning heady repar-
tee
The only blot on the horizon of
those sunny days was Mrs Muir's
cold She complained of it a great
deal and developed a short mincing,
little cought Venice could not de-
termine whether it was a real cough
or something affectedly nurtured
But even the cold brought its ad-
vantages Mrs. Muir decided towwait
until it was cured before she com-
municated with certain acquaint-
ances in Paris and cousin Alicia Poe
at Antfbes The interim of no friends
gave Venice a delicious respite, noth-
ing to worry about It was a period
of seven days in which she never
once had to bother over what any
one thought of her Lovely Venice
being just Venice.- no necessity of
summoning sudden, smiles, sudden
gay rejoinders The cold also gave
her several unforeseen opportunities
for prowling about on her own The
cold was responsible too for her
fleeting conversation with the girl
WIth th* big' eye*, a conversation
which gave her a mental start, a
glimpse of a new point of view
It was their sixth day in Paris Mrs
Muir and Venice were in the farmer's
bedroom after luncheon
"What’ll wl do this afternoon.
Mother? Lets sit in the Tulleries.
It's such a lovely day ”
Mrs Muir sighed
"My head is all stopped up, she
complained fretfully. "I don't think
I'll go out."
Venic glanced back at her with
genuine] sympathy Her nuthtr's
nose was really unduly red
“But the sunshine might do -your
cold good." sh suggested
Mrs Muir pressed a hand to her
forehead
realized that th” was a new person
and she was deing her customary
difident self. She gave an exact im-
1tatlon of her mother's most win-
ning smile
They made themselves comforable
at adjacent aides of the tbale
"I’m over here Mope, are you?’
’No, with my mother."
"I broke loose from mine. My fam-
ily is party mad I hate parties"
Venice forgot to be anything but
natural
"So do it," she cried "Why do
you?"

How humiliating
Venice hurried into her hat and
coat and ten minutes later was walk-
ing through the Place Vendome, up.
to the Rue de Rivoli and on across
the Seine. She found a narrow win-
mg street and followed it Wine
shps, antique shops, book shops
She lingered so long staring through
dingy windows that dusk suddenly
told her the hour was growing lute
She was completely lost and had to
inquire her way back every few
street
"Pardon, madame, ou est le Qual
d'Orsay? Pardon, m'sieur. ou est le
Qual d'Orsay?" and so on.
Headed in the right direction she '
became lost in impressionistic de-
tails which painted themselves sharply
on the sensitive retina of her appre-
ciation The soft pastels of dying
daylight in the darkening ky, here
a square of ght in a high window
like an orange block in the mauve
dusk, there a mass of yellow roses
in a shabby vender's arms Crossing
the Pont Royal she lingered a mo-
ment staring down into "the purple
ribbon of the Seine, sluggish and
sheenless, its dullness broken here
and there by the point of a reflected
light.
Back at the hotel Venice found
her mother sniffiug and coughing
and crying miserably
"Whsre have, you been. Venice?
I've been horribly worried "
"I'm sorrp. Mother it’s only twen-
ty minutes of seven. How's your
cold0'’ . I, )
Wretched And my chest hurts.
Where have you been’"
"To, the Qual d’Orsay and through
back streets somewhere out towards
the Boulevard St Germain ’’
“Oh. my head My head's split-
ting "
Veniee regarded her mother so-
berly Was she really ill or was this
one of her perpetual exaggerations?

you can't ell. *
"Let's call a doctor Don't you re-
member that Doctor Hawks you had
once before fom the American hos-
pital?"
"Yes let's I think I'd better have
him "
They ate dinner in Mrs, Muir's
room Doctor Hawks arrived as "they
finished their crepes Suzette.
"A heavy cold." he pronouncede
"Stay in bed several days. Mrs. Muir. '
"Are you coming to see me again?"
she inquired anxiously
"I hardly think it's necessary Not
