Declares Girl
Leaped From Car
GAINESVILLE May 18.—— A
tale in which an intoxicated girl was
depicted as leaping to her death
from a speeding automobile driven
by a man whose attentions she had
scorned was related today in clos-
ing testimony at the trial of Louis
Wiess, charged with murder for the
death of Miss Margaret Berner.
Wiess testified the girl had told
him a short time before the fatal
leap that she "felt pretty good and
didn't care who knew it." He said
she had been drinking wine and
beer at a dance hall.
He said he was taking her to the
home of her parent*. where he had
been forbidden to go. He asked her
if she would be able to welk from
the gate to the house alone. He tes-
tified he had just finished express-
i’.g doubt as to her ability to walk
t at distance when she opened the
car door and stepped out, while he
was driving the car at a high speed

Hoard, reputed Informer for federal
prohibition agents, must spend 60
days in the Dallas county jail as
a consequence of his conviction
yesterday for aggravated assault on
a cafe waitress.
Witnesses described Hoard as a
bragging, drinking man who hit
the waitress because she would pay
no attention to him. One witness *
testified Hoard boasted he was
working for the government and
making plenty of money.
Hoard also was under a murder
indictment, along with L. C. Smith
and N. D. Heston, federal prohibi-
tion agents, in the killing of F. M. ,
McGlothlin, country storekeeper of
near Irving.
Blay Decrease Purchasers
WASHINGTON, May 16.—(P-
The Federal Reserve Board, which
decided yesterday to continue open
market operations and buy govern-
ment securities to “the extent and
I amount ta be determined from time
i to time as conditions justify," is ex-
I pected in informed financial quar-
ters .sen to decrease the securities
purchases in coming weeks
These have approximated $100,-
000,000 a week for five weeks. It was
believed the committee would watch
the cash reserves of member banks
and if they dropped the purchases
would be increased The general im-
pression was that the present week
would be in the last in which the
system would purchase *100.000,000
of government securities.

Warning of a possible third party
movement unless congress enacts
an unemployment relief program
before the party conventions was
sounded in the senate today by Sen-
ator Borah (R., Idaho).
He said he could not conceive of
the two great parties going to their
conventions without having adopted
a program for relieving the jobleba.
"If anything would call a third
party into existence that would," he
declared.
Senator Watson, the republican
leader, promptly gave his personal
assurance that the legislative pro-
gram contemplated relief legisla-
tion.
The discussion came during de-
bate on the Tydings amendment to
the tax bill to legalise and tax 2.75
per cent beer and use the proceeds
for public works.
