about to tell you, unsolicited, too.

nating job of reading the letters
that come my way. I will honest-
ly try, also to read between the
lines in order to get the word pic-
tur plus the impresstons of those
who take the time and trouble to
write me.
Some letters warm my heart. I
am instinctively drawn to the writ-
er and tn deep sympathy with their
problem. Others have quite th
opposite effect. These are the let-
ters that seem Insincere or flippant
or worse. Such letters make me
sad: one cannot afford to be any
at these things. The sort of letter
I mean reads like tils:

My personal reaction to this let-
ter may do me little credit. Per-
hap« I should yearn to comfort
this young woman or praise her as
a reward for her independent spir-
it. She not only gloatg over hav-
ing done wrong, but glories in the
fait that she is associating with
a boy whose reputation is appar-
ently in fatten.
As a matter of fact. I can't help
but feel that she is boasting. Any-
way she is exaggerating and very
obvtousty Haing for a fall. I do not
believe, however, that she is exag-
gerating when she says her moth-
er is nervous and giving t crying
edells, .
What I ask myself an rading
end rereading such a letter is its
object? It does not seem to ask
for direction, or advice. Is Ia
sort of "whistling to the dark” ges-
ture made by a foolish girl whe
knows deep down in her heart
that she is wrong and is very,
