The daily press is called the
Fourth Estate because of its influ-
ence upon public affairs Formerly
in England and France, the church,
the nobility and the commons were
known as the Three Estates of the
Realm There has been much dis-
cussion as to who first called the
press Ite Fourth Estate. Authorship
of the phrase is variously attributed
to Burke. Carlyle, and Maccauley.
In 1840, Thomas Carlyle published
his "Heroes and Hero Worship". In
lecture V. of that work, he says.
Burke said there were Three Es-
tates In Parliament: but, in the
Reporter's Gallery yonder, there is
a Fourth Estate more important
far than they all. It is not a figure
of speech, or a witty saying; it is
a literal tact—very momentous to
us in these times. 2 Carlyle's style
