The veterans administration’s de-
cision to refer the case of lesse
Owens Clifford to the comptroller
general was coincident today with
a ruling by Acting Comptroller Oen-
ml R N Elliott that an Oklahoma
war veteran could not collect the
bonus paid to the wite he had left.
The administration said It would
ask a ruling on whether to pay Gif-
ford, missing for eight years from
his South Pittsburgh, Tenn , home,
the bonus collected by his wife soon
after he was declared legally dead
in Tennessee.
Clifford applied for his bonus re-
cently. and was located two days
ago by newspapermen in Susanville,
Calif. —
Elliott's decision was in the case
of Harry Western Rhodes, of Ok-
lahoma. Elliott said the record re-
vealed that Rhodes left his common
law wife, whom he had named as
beneficlary of his bonus. She later

For Bank Robbery
LINDEN. Oct 23—«-Prosecu-
tors qualined jurors on the death
penalty as Charlie Chapman, es-
caped Arkansas convict. went to
trial here today for complicity in
the attempted robbery of the Pirst
National Bank at Atlanta Aug. 31.
Judge R H Harvey granted sev-
erances of trials for Buddy Sadler
and O. H Lndsey who escaped with
Chapman from the Cummings pris-
on farm in Arkansas Aug. 25, and
are also accused of the Allanta rob-
bery.
Chapman, Sadler and Lindsey left
a trail of violence through East
Texas during the brief days of the
freedom.
Three jurors were selected al
noon in the Chapman trial Lind-
sey and Sadler watched progress of
the selection nervously.
With the defendant was his sis-
ter, Mrs. Charles Trott of Houston
Warden Tom Fisher of the Arkan-
sas prison was also present
The three convicts were serving
terms for bank robbery when they
escaped.
