The time has come when Denton
County property owners should pay
their 1936 state and county taxes
to avoid the usual rush, with only
10 days remaining to which taxes
may be paid without penalty, Coun-
ty Tav Assessor-Collector R T.
Haynie feminded Wednesday. After
that date, the penalty will be as-
sensed only those who failed to pay
the first halt of their 1936 taxes
during the Oct. 1-Dec. 1 paving
period and failed also to pay the
full amount by Jan. 31.
With Jan. 31 as the last day on
which the tax payment may be
made without penalty, collections
through the mail are heavy and
local collections have been light be-
cause of bad weather, Haynie stated.
A total of 1.827 poll tax receipts have
been issued to date, which is nearly
300 less than the 2,219 issued at
this time last year.

Shearer will be presented to Den-

Two years ago, the Dallas critic
relates, the late Director Irving
Thatberg began preparations for the
film’s production. He sent two cam-
eramen to Verona, where they took
2,769 photographs of buildings, gar-

that might be useful in reproduc-

Italy. .
Preparatory work occupied Miss
Nonna Shearer, the "JuJIet" of the
film. for months She read every
verson of the play ever published,
and steeped herself in criticism of
the play and its characters. Accord-

tice" that cause went in the midst
of plenty.
In his inaugural address, deliv-
ered beneath a storm-darkened sky
to thousands gathered on the Cap-
itol plaza. he pictured uncounted
poor families living “under the pall
of disaster” and said:
“We are determined to make ev-
ery American citizen the subject
of his country's interest and con-
cam."
Progress tn recovery is obvious,
the president said, but the “new or-
der of things" brought about since
1833 means more than that.
Restating his philosophy in broad
terms and leaving his specific pro-
gram to the future, he spoke of us-
ing new materials of social justice
“to erect on the old foundations a
more enduring structure for the use
of future generations."
Satan to Constitution
Moments before he made his ad-
dress he had taken the presidential
oath again from Chief Justice
Hughes. With justices of the Su-
preme Court among his hearers, he
spoke once more of the constitution
but said nothing about the courts.
This year, Mr. Roosevet recalled,
marks the 150th anniversary of that
fundamental charter. The forefath-
ers found it a way out of the chaos
that followed the revolutionary war,
he id adding:
“They created a strong govern-
ment with powers of united action
sufficient then and now to solve
problems utterly beyond individual

“Istinctively we recognised a

the individual the evei -rising prob-

Government Aid Nereaaary
Efforts to solve those problems
without aid of government had fall-
ed, he said, because such aid was
imperative “to create those moral
controls over the services of science
which are neceesary to make sci-
ence the servant instead of ruth-
less master of mankind."
The president said controls “over
blind" economic forces and blindly
selfish men" had to be found, so “we
refused to leave the problems of
our common welfare to be solved
by the winds of chance and the
hurricanes of disaster."
"In this," he said, "we Americans
were discovering no wholly new
truth; we were writing a new chap-
ter in our book of self-government ”
He concluded:
"In taking again the oath of of-
fice as president of the United
States, I assume the solemn obliga-
tion of leading the American peo-
ple forward along the road oyer
which they have chosen to ad-
vance.”
