Cardui has two widely dem-

REPLIES TO MAN WHO cLAMs
MOST WOMEN NEED ADVICE
ABOUT MARRIAGE
A cynical disciple of George Ber-
nard Shaw who believes that wom-
en. not men are the aggressors in
a love affair writes an interesting
.letter about marriage in general and
wives in particular. ——
He asks, not without reason, why
it is that women who want so much
to make a success of marriage seem
to know so little about what it takes
to make marriage succesful. He says
that it is the wives, not the hus-
bands. who stand in line tor advice
and who seem to need so much di-
rection.
Possibly one reason is that women
are more given than men to discuss-
ing their private Itves. Another is
that they like to hear the opin-
ions of others in order to justify
their own. They want the advice of
women they feel are older and wiser
—so they may do just as they please,
anyway.
"Dear Mrs. Martin: I read a great
many newspapers in my business
every day and on every women’s
page I find the editors admitting
that marriage is a terrible state of f
being, but urging their readers to
make the best of it. One writer says, I
quoting an Indianapolis correspon-
dent : ‘It isn't the smart women who
are flocking to divorce courts—it's
the dumb ones The others are do-
ing the best they can to make a
go of marriage, and plenty are suc-
ceeding.'
Marriage No Headache
“We always talk of marriage as
though it was something that had
to be endured rather than enjoyed.
This theory has been sold to people
so long that they are beginning to
take it for granted. Isn't it possible
to have somce fun out of marriage
no wand then? Must it always be
a prolonged headache for which
there is no remedy?
Men do not agree with universal
clamor that marriage is a failure
just because It is marriage I think
they leave it to women and women
writers. Men advise other and young-
er men to stay single, but they do
so, as a rule, because the econom-
ic problems of marriage are too
much for them
"Family men know that marri-
age. children and domestic respon-
sibilities take every cent they can
lay hands on and leave nothing for
the husband Having earned the
money that makes the establish-
ment go.' certain misanthropes feel
that they should have the fun of
spending some of it Such is their
grievance. They do not attack wom-
en because of their role in the plot
"The masculine sneer at marri-
age is nearly always because of dol-
lar* and cents Hundreds of young
men exclaim every day in public
and private: Gee. I wish I could
get married, but I simply cannot af-
' ford it: And that is that.
| “I have read many of your column
i and read many letters from women
reader*. and you all. almost without
1 exception, talk about marriage as It
। It was a toothache What is the mat-
ter? If women do not want to mar-
ry why do they do so? And I think

I suspect that what you really
mean is that women are always cry-

Possibly men have better sense
