A home run in the last of the
seventh by Franks gave the I. O
O P. club its second win of the sea-
son over the Baptists, league lead-
ers up to last night. This win for
the Clubmen threw the circuit lead
into a deadlock for the second time
Six hits were made by the victors
off Blankenship, while five were
made by the Churchmen off Adams.
Only one error was registered, be-
ing credited to the victors.
Blankenship struck out three and

Give Marie de Nervaud a good
cowpony and a western saddle, and
shell be perfectly at home in the
rangeland of Montana and Idaho,
the setting of "Flame Trail." her
western romance which starts soon
as the Record-Chronicle's new se-
rial.
Not only is her own background
western—she is a native Califor-
nian. born in San Francisco—but
the blood of pioneer ancestors runs
in her veins Her grandfather went
to Oregon in '46 and to California
in '40. He journeyed back to Phil-
adelphia in '53. bringing his bride
home to San Francisco via Panama
And there wasn’t any canal in
those days.
Miss de Nervaud's adventurous
spirit took her overseas during the
World War.
"Even though I couldn’t ride any
cowponies over there," she says, “I
did get stationed where there were
plenty of cowboys in khaki. So what
I haven’t learned about the west
at first hand. I have heard at many
strange places and moments behind
the lines.”
From Music To Writing
The first career of this weaver
of western tales was musical She
left her beloved California to study
in Paris with Harold Bauer Later
she established a flourishing music
school in Boston.
"I guess the lure of writing was
in my blood and bound to come out
sooner or later." Miss de Nervaud
smiles and pushes back the mass of
auburn hair which is like Kay's, her
game little heroine tn "Flame Trail.”
"Ever since I can remember, I've
had the urge to follow in the foot-
steps of my grandmother Hannah
Lloyd Neall—the one who sailed to
California in 53 She really played
quite a part in the early literary
life of San Francisco.
Burned Her Bridges
After 10 years of teaching, Miss
de Nervaud decided the time had
come to "take a chance." She burned
her bridges, gave 73 pupils into
other hands and moved to New York
to write. The first year she earned

It may have been good advice
when Horace Greely first uttered
the crack but the world champion
I Yankees are beginning to lose faith
in this go west" business. •
The first time they deserted the
Bronx for Cleveland. Detroit. Chi-
cago and St. Louis, they compiled the
indifferent record of four victories
and five defeats. Now. going into
Chicago to meet the amazing White
Sox, their report card shows only
two tiumphs in six starts since
they opened the tour in Cleveland
Until yesterday, when Tiger* gave
them a 4-3 timming, their own mis-
guided actions had been responsi-
ble for much of their woe. But yes-
terday they had no such excuse-
just too much good pitching by
southpaw Jake Wade, who let them
doown with four hits and struck
out nine, and too much hitting by
th* Detroiters, who landed on Lefty
Gomez for eight hits, including of
Hank Greenberg’s game winning ho-
mer.
Manager Joe McCarthy hardly can
look forward to the White Sox series
with enthusiasm for the Sox are
riding the crest of a nine game
winning streak, best to date in the
majors that virtually has tied them
for second place with Cleveland
Limited Talent
Possibly it's manager Jimmy Dykes
big black cigars that hold the se-
cret of Sox success. The team has
Triple* — Kuhel, Senators 0;
Greenberg 7.
Home run*—Greenberg 14; Sel-
kirk. Yankee* 10
Stolen bases Appling, White Sox
9: Chapman. Senators 8
Pitching — Hudlin, Indian* 0-0;
Pearson Yankee* 4-0.

had settled its football coaching
P Dan Stallworth, who piloted the
Quanah High School Indian* for
seven years, twice turning out dis-
trict championship teams, yester-
day signed a contract to coach
the Lions. He will replace Milton
Moffett, over whom the squad had
struck in protest of the school
board's failure to renew his con-
tract
Recently, however, members of
the striking squad indicated they
would be ready to play under any
