Picking Husband
How is a girl to tell the good from
ths bad, when she picks a husband?
Or how can she be made to under-
stand that a man who may be
the most perfect sweetheart may
turn out to be the most imperfect
husband and father? It is frequent-
ly said that women are no judges,
of men and considering some of
the specimens some otherwise in-
telligent women marry, it must be
so.

Apparent Incousistencies
And underlying the surface mores
in German foreign policy, the seem-
ing inconsistencles of Hitter’S game
of put and take, are the deeply-
etched fundamentals:
What is behind Hiter’s demand
for colonies? What is his game in
Spain? How do Hitjer and Mussolini
hit it off; Will there be war with
Russia? Can France and Germany
ever get together? What about An-
glo-German relations?
No one can predict with any de-
gree of certainty What Hitler will
do tn the future. One can only re-
view the past. Hitler works intui-
tively. He sees an opportunity and
he seizes it, often to the amaze-
ment of his dose advisors. ,
Take the demand for return of
the colontes stripped from Germa-
ny at the end of the world war.

NEW YORK, Sept. 15.—(—
Adolf Hitler, the master hand at
intuitive action, today is the living
question mark in the calculations of
all great powers.
"What will Hitler do?"
The question is asked score upon
score of times in foreign chancellor-
ies as one international crisis after
another arises—each with the po-
tential danger of actual widespread
war.
Today . . . How will he react
to the Franco-British coalition to
send warshlys into the Mediterra-
nean to drive out pirate submar-
ines? What, really, will he do about
colonies?
(tomorrow . . Who knows what
question may be demanded of Hit-

the course of world history?

HE
GIRL SHOULD HEED FAMILY
CRITICISM OF BEAU—AR-
DENT SUITOR SOMETIMES
WORST HUSBAND
When a girl is in love and her
boy friend is paying what was
once termed "ardent court" to her.
It would be impossible for the most
convincing person to make her be-
lieve that, if she marries him, he
would ever refuse to support her
and their children. Yet the courts
are filled with such eases at non-
support and the men involved were
once the aforesaid ardent suitors
and in the eyes of the girls they
were woing, models of all the man-
ly virtues.
There is no meaner man on earth
than the man who deliberately re-
fuses to support his children. Per-
haps he does not actually refuse, but
the result is the same—he just
doesn’t do it. And nothing is more
heartbreaking for a mother than
to have to resort to the law in
order to make her husband do his
very obvious duty, yet heartbroken
or outraged wives very often find
themselves in this terrible dilem-
ma.

Campaign promises don’t mean a
thing. Neither do the protestations
of the ardent lover necessarily mean
a thing How is a girl to distin-
guish between sincerity and "a
line?"
Well, for one thing, she might
listen when her father and broth-
ers talk about or against her boy
friend. Instead of taking heed of
what they say the average girl im-
mediately rises up in his defense.
Every knock from father Is a boost
and every grand slam from brother
is added on to the boy friend's
score.
It's true that there are oodles
of fathers who are jealous of any
beau who sets foot in the house
and would not say a good word for
the best suitor that ever came awoo-
ing. It does not take a gtrl long
to discover this trait in her father
and to discount his comments on
[ the men she knows.
I Brothers, however, are eage-
' eyed, and usually trustworthy, when
it comes to picking faults in sis-
ter's beau. and tt's the long-headed
sister who pays attention to what
her brothers say. If "hex a good
egg,” they will admit it, however,
grudgingly. Men may be hard on
other men and distrustful of them
but, by and large, they play fair.
Women Gullible
The exception to this flattering
statement is the man who finds
another man in his way in his woo-
ing of the girl he loves. All’s fair
in love and war. is then the accept-
ed code.
But when a man's heart is not af-
fected and his judgment unbiased,
he is usually keen in sizing up the
qualities of the other fellow. Girls
who have brothers should be grate-
ful for their opinions, instead of
which, as a rule, they furiously re-
sent it.
Men waste no sympathy on other
men. They expect them to do the
right thing by their wives and chil-
dren. If you check on this state-
ment, you will find that men rare-
ly. If ever, make any excuses for a
man who walks out on his obliga-
tions to his tunlif. Women often
find a reason for it—which is not
greatly to their credit—but then,
women are, and always were, gul-

Mussolini's visit to Berlin if im-
pending. There probably will be
more pomp and circumstance than
the German capital has seen since
thte later Emperoh Franz Josef of
Austria-Hungary or Czar Nicholas
of Imperial Russia visited Kaiser
Wilhelm II.
Yet everyone knows that when
Hitler visited the Italian Duca at
Venice in June. 1934, the two did
hot hit it off well
A year ago, at the annual Nurn-
berg party rally. Hitler caused
world comment by expressing a
yearning for Russian territory. "If
we had the Urals." he said. “If we
possessed Siberia, If we had the
Ukraine. National Socialist Ger-
many would be swimming in pros-
perity"
Hitler's propaganda minister, Dr.
Joseph Paul Goebbels, berated Rus-
sia in a manner that led many to
believe a rupture of diplomatic re-
lations inevitable.
Germany Wants Peace
A year has passed and there is
less talk of a Husso-German war.
Hitter has been at great pains to
tell the world at Nurnberg that
Germany wants peace, and peace
only.
Meanwhile in the Wihelmstrasse,
as elsewhere in the world. The
quality of Russian bombers and
tanks as demanstrated in Spain
has become known. It also is known
that Japan, another bosom friend
of the Third ReSoh, has her hands

is the girl, but, while she may
fool him, even lead him into a pret-
ty pickle she cannot, in the very
nature of things bring him such
complete disaster as it is in hts
power to wreak on her.
When a man lets a woman down
and. with her, their child or chil-
dren there tt just no excuse for it,
and nothing to be said in his fa-
vor. Yet even such a man is often
taken on by another woman.

diately to the studios.
To accomplish this task the Rec-

Further, the French, at the mo-
ment. do not seem to lay as much
stress on the Russo-Frer-ch alli-
ance as they did some months
ago. Hence Hitler, again working
intuitively, seems more interested in
weaning Franco away from Russia
than in getting into a fight with
the Soviets.
In fact, efToirt after effort is be-
ing made by ' Germany to come
to a working agreement with
France. When Hitler is reminded
that in his biography he designated
France as the Raich's arch-enemy,
he replies simply: "Enter my cor-
rections on the pagaa of history."
Again a change of policy.
A condition to a Franco-German
rapprochement, however, is an un-
rterrtandtag with Great Britain.
Hitler knowh this "We must coma
to an arrangement with England,
cost what it may," he is reliably
reported to have said on repeated
occasions.
To the interested bystander, he
seems to take a zig-zag road to reach
this goal. This is because here, too.
Hitler choose intuitively the par-
ticular method to be Invoked at
any particular time.
What he may do in the future
is anybody’s guess. Intuition, how-
ever. will be the Fuehrer’s guid-
ing star.
