mander of China's “Red” army in

than 200 villages have been burned
in the past month, with extensive
loss of life.
Accounts of the burning of near-
ly 100 such villages were obtained
by the Associated Press from per-
sons witnessing the fires.
It has been conservatively esti-
mated that 2,500 Chinese fanners
have bee killed, 3,000 wounded and
about 40,000 driven into mountain
refuges or forced to flee into “Red”
territory.
The burning of villages was said
to be continuing at a rate of about
three a day. Stories of these burn-

WASHINGTON, March 2«,—(P—
Senator Bone (D-Wash) suggested
today that Presoident Roosevelt use
the proposed $1,100,000,000 naval ex-
pansion program to effect a re-
duction in world armaments.
Bone, a member of the Senate
Naval Affairs Committee, said it
appeared "entirely logical" to him
that the President, armed with the
authorization for a huge increase
to the Navy, might be able to ob-
tain agreements with other powers
to delay or halt naval building.
The expansion bill, already pass-
ed by the House, will be taken up
the Senate committe at closed meet-
ings Tuesday. Chairman Walsh <D-
Mass) indicated Naval experts would
be called for secret testimony be-
fore the hearings were opened to
the public.
Bone said hse doubted that all
of the construction the measure
would authorize would be carried o1
if the bill were enacted in its pres-
ent form.
