lines, somebody always threw the ball
back to the pitcher.
If a ball got lost, as it did sometimes
way out in the weedy outfield, the game
was halted until the ball was found, and
the fellow who hit the ball had to go back
to the base he was nearest when the um-
pire decided the ball was really lost.
The umpire? He always stood behind
the pitcher and called balls, strikes, fair or
foul and anything else that needed calling.
He never mixed in fist fights, and there
weren’t a lot of them. Everybody had to
be at work Monday morning. Baseball
was a game, not a way to make a fortune.
Pitchers today throw sliders, change-
ups, curves, forkballs, screwballs, etc. It is
to laugh.
The best pitcher I ever knew would
have put Nolan Ryan to shame, you bet.
He was left handed and threw the fastest
ball ever thrown, and he also throwed:
outs (curves), ins (curves), out-drops, in-
drops and dipsy-doodles (which nobody
could describe — or hit.)
There wasn’t such a thing as a spitball
in the games I remember. If there was, it
was hit over the centerfielder’s head. But
there were claims, sometimes, that a pitch-
er had put a phonograph needle in a ball.
They ruined baseball when they started
charging people to watch a game. Now
they have people like somebody called
Martin who never could play worth a darn
but who does things to get publicity and
make people pay to see him. Good night!
New Time
Jim Bill, who lives way out in the forks
of the creek and knows more about what
is going on than some guys who live right
on Main Street, says he didn’t forget to
turn back his clock that hour Congress, in
all its wisdom, gave us but that he has
some roosters that apparently haven't
heard about the new time. Let’s hope
Congress doesn’t pass another law regu-
