Easter is almost upon us again. The date is April
11. In the Christian world, Easter Sunday commemor-
ates the Resurrection of Christ. Easter customs, as we
practice them in the U.S. today, are a singular tribute
to the spirit of Easter and to the quite freshness of a
Spring morning when one can almost feel, for a few
hours, the pervading sense of tranquility and consid-
eration of our fellowman that 2,000 years ago released
humanity from the bondage of sheer barbarism.
Many capture the spirit of Easter by going to
Church. The simple Easter egg hunt and the tradition
of the Easter bonnet lend joy and color to the occasion
All of the ways in which Faster is observed hold a cer-
tain humility — as they should. Easter is a day of
civilizing Easter influence. It is merely one day out of
365, but it is a day that expresses the way we should
live throughout the year—in humble respect for the
unseen power that guides our lives.

Tira, just across the River in Hopkins County, is
one of the most progressive communities we have visit-
ed in a long time. The occasion of our Saturday visit
was the Fun and Play Day to raise funds to add a
roping arena to their otherwise well equipped Com-
munity Center.
Some of the folks that made our visit enjoyable
included the Weirs, Cokers. Homs. Pettys, Smiddys,
Cliffords, Lindleys, Vandivers and others whose names
have slipped our mind. One thing we do remember is
that Herm Weir is not good enough player to take this
writer as a partner and beat Mrs. Weir and their dau- _
ghter, Janie, in a game of Forty-two.

A standard plot used
for years in the soap op-
eras and pulp magazine
stories has been the char-
acterization of the beauti-
ful, lonely damsel pining
away beside the telephone
that never rings. We can
sympathize, h o w e v e r,
with the plight of the 17-
year-old Greensboro, Nor-
th Carolina girl whose ex-
perience was the extreme
opposite; her phone rang
almost constantly, from
callers as far as 1,000
miles away, as many as
100 calls a day. Not only
that. but almost every one
of the phone calls were
from males, and it is al-
most certain that some of
them must have been
very handsome and eligi-
ble bachelors.

bad manners, contempt for authority, disrespect for
older people. Children nowadays are tyrants . . . they
