Referral selling is a sales
scheme whereby purchases are
induced on the representation
that the cost to the seller to
other prospects.
In short, it is a method gen-
erally used to market an over-
priced product or service, and
it is designed to induce the re-
luctant consumer to enter into
a contract which legally obli-
gates him to pay for the mer-
chandise or service.
A prospective customer may
be contacted through newspaper
advertising, telephone solici-
tation, or by a door-to-door
salesman. The products typi-
cally are home fire alarm sys-
tems, aluminum siding, some
household appliances such as
vacuum cleaners, and promot-
ional land sales. The initial
approach may consist of an
invitation to participate in a
money-making opportunity or
a chance to receive the pro-
duct or service at no cost.
The consumer who encoun-
ters one of these referral sales
schemes would be well-advised
to note the following. First,
