Signs with New Mexico University
Carthage wide receiver Charles Westmoreland has been signed by New Mexico University to a football
scholarship. He's was on the phone to the college recruiter Wednesday before inking the pact. Carthage
football coach Sleepy Reynolds, school counselor Bonnie Pope and Mrs. Martha Westmoreland were on
hand for ceremonies. As a sophomore, Westmoreland caught 38 passes for 554 yards and four touchdowns
and rushed five times for 46 yards as Carthage posted a 15-1 record to reach the state championship game.
As a junior he had 40 catches for 494 yards and 10 TDs and ran three times for 17 yards. He also returned
seven punts for 65 yards and six kickoffs for 115. In his senior campaign he ran five times for 31 yards,
caught 25 passes for 396, returned nine punts for 25 and ran seven kickoffs back for 173. he also threw two
passes, completed one for 13 yards, not bad numbers for a player who spent a year as a defensive starter.
The Carthage senior also plays basketball, averages more that 20 points and eight rebounds and is the
leading scorer.

gore and Carthage meet next, then
Kilgore plays Henderson in the
season finale. Carthage has beaten
Kilgore 47-43 in a previous district
encounter.
Rodney Cato was the only Pup
in double figures with 10 points,
but seven others produced two
points or more as Carthage im-
proved to 10-6 for the season.
"Playing one game a week
makes it hard to keep the kids fo-
cused and it really showed when
we got beat by Hallsville," coach
D. Lynn Ward said.
"This week we got ourselves
back on track and I saw some guys
like Kerry Hodge, Rodney Cato
and Dan Cloud playing some of
their best basketball of the season.
They didn't do it by themselves, but
their games did stand out this
week."

Fields beat Joaquin, 60-48, here
Tuesday night to knock the latter
out of first place.
Amanda Ellis poured in seven
goals and drained 10 of 14 free
throws for 27 points and teammate
Shan Rouse sank six baskets and a
pair of free tosses for 15 to guide
the Lady Yellowjackets to their
fifth win in eight 21-AA starts.
When Timpson beat Garrison on
(mother front, the three-way tie for
second developed.
With two games remaining.
Beckville leads the race with a 6-2
mark, but has a game with Timpson
remaining.
Elysian Fields earned its 19th
win against seven setbacks despite
scoring just seven points in the
third quarter. The Lady Yellow-
jackets had built a 41-25 halftime
lead and were able to overcome
shooting woes in the last half.

able secure a 62-59 victory here
• Tuesday.
The win no doubt puts Lindale ,
in the state playoffs as 15-AAAA's
No. 1 representative, although it
hasn't clinched the outright
championship yet.
. Carthage still has the inside
track for the No. 2 bi-district berth
and can cop second place outright
if it can win both of its remaining
district games.
; The Lady Bulldogs thought they
had a chance to share the crown
with Lindale, but didn't count on

Carthage held a 42-41 lead go-
ing into the final stanza, but Ca-

Kelsey Moss seven to put the
Lady Eagles over the top.
Lindale could not handle
Carthage post Kiesha Burchette,
who led all scorers with 28 points,
including an eight-of-11 effort
from the line.
When she got a hot hand in the
final period, Lindale resorted to
putting her at the line and she
drilled six of seven attempts in the
eight-minute period and had 14
points overall.
Lindale needs just one win in its
next two starts to mathematically
clinch the outright district crown. It
would have to lose to Henderson
and Kilgore in remaining games to
leave the door open for Carthage.
The Lady Bulldogs have to beat
Hallsville and Henderson to pur-
chase their ticket to the state play-
