With only 10 shopping days be-
fore Christmas, local cash registers
are briskly ringing up sales as
customers flock to area stores in
search of the perfect gift for their
loved ones.
Anil most Panola County mer-
chants say business is good this
year with some projecting sales far
above those of last year
From jewelry to computers to
bicycles - everyone seems to be
getting into the Christmas buying
spirit — signalling a strengthened
economy for Panola County.
"We've had a fantastic holiday
season, people really seem to be
getting into die spirit and have
since as early as October," said
Alice Weaver, owner of The Col
lection.
Weaver noted that people
seemed to be having a lot of fun
buying this year, a fait corrobo-
ratal by their purchases.
"Rabbit fur jackets have done
great this year as well as hiking
boots and Brighton belts and hand
books," Weaver said.
The same is true at Beauty

while Boot Scootin’s owner, Wyatt
Henderson noted that all western
wear was selling good - cspecially
boots and western jewelry.
According to Beall's Assistant
Manager Anitra Hams, women’s
vests are selling well as well as ca
sual sports shirts for men Big sell
ers in the boys department are

girls, dresses are selling well this

But the big seller this year
seems to Ire anything electronic.
Smith said her husband's coin
panion business, Sense of Sound,
has sold a large volume of Rock-
ford Fosgate stereo systems
which she described as "a must for
any teenager."
In addition, she said, cassette
and CD players are always popular
gifts for teenagers.
But younger children are getting
into the electronic action
Toy department manager at the
Cartilage Wal Mart noted sales of
children's electronic games and
teaching tools have went through
the root this year, far exceeding last
vear.
"Nintendo's, Super Nintnedo’s,
Sega Genesis and all their related
games are very popular this year as
well as electronic products for
learning such as our V-Tech prod-
nets, Alphabet Desk Basic Smart
Start Computer and Talking Whiz.
Kid II All our teaching computers
have sold very well," Mims stated.
And of course there are the tra-
ditional items that always top chil
dren’s Christmas wish lists.
"We've sold a lot ot bicycles and
dolls and games Popular dolls this
year ate Newborn Nancy and Tele-
phone Tammy while Mr Mouth
and Don’t Wake Daddy are just a
couple of our best selling games,"
Muns noted.
For the even younger set,
Fisher Price Walking Tonkas are
big sellers, Wal Mart reported, as
well as Little Tykes products.
The same is true at Perry's
where assistant manager Alice Hall
said big playhouse wagons. Snug
glebug and bicycles are big sellers
this year
But perhaps the most surprising.

Panola College will pay off the

newly renovated health sciences
center.
The college board voted Mon-
day to pay $46,914.96 in January
on the note for the former Gibson's
building, which has been renovated
to house the college's nursing pro- i
grams ’
According to college president '
Dr. William Edmonson, the deci-
sion was made to pay the remain-
der of the note early in order to
save $1,776.18 in interest charges.
Jackie Robinson, the college's I
vice president of fiscal affairs, had
investigated the loan and found '
there would be no penalty for early
payment.
Since funds were available in
reserves to cover the remainder,
Edmonson said, the board chose to
take the savings.
Also during Monday's meeting,
the board employed Viola Ruth
Garcia as the third instructor for the
associate degree nursing program
The action means the college
am admit a total of 30 students to
the program when it opens in
January The program is limited to
a ratio of 10 students to each
