The announcement that the Cotton Bowl would be enlarged by
some 50,000 seats is one which will be whole-heartedly welcomed
by sports enthusiasts of the Southwest. However, it may be sev-
eral years before the project becomes a reality because of the re-
strictions on building materials for recreational facilities. If our
memory is correct, the additional seats would probably make the
Dallas bowl the largest football stadium in the country, with a ca-
pacity of more than 125,000. The Los Angeles coliseum and Sol-
diers field, however, can seat more than 100,000.____

Schoolboy Teams
Lose Thursday
By The Associated .Press
Three undefeated, untied teams
fell last night in the first volley
of games in a busy week-end of
schoolboy football.
One class AAAA perfect record
team—Sunset of Dallas—was tied
14-14 by Arlington Heights (Fort
Worth); one class AAA team —
McAllen-—took a 13-6 drubbing
from Miller of Corpus Christi,
and one class AA eleven—Mt.
Vernon—was whipped 7-0 by At-
lanta. Miller and Atlanta inci-
dentally, arc among the unde-
feated, untied teams in the state.
Brownwood, which has shown
it is a strong contender for the
class AAA state championship,
whammed North Side of Fort
Worth 33-14 and in other games
Bowie (El Paso) outscored Big
Spring 39-25, South Park (Beau-
mont) licked Brackenridge (San
Antonio) 19-6 and indemendent
St. Thomas (Houston) defeated
Sam Houston (Houston) 32-0.
Port Arthur, plays Lamar of
Houston at Houston tonight in the
feature game of the week in the
state. This matches two of the
acknowledged powers of class
AAAA. Lamar, undefeated and
untied, has beaten such worties
as Baytown and Thomas Jeffer-
son (San Antonio.) Port Arthur
is undefeated but was tied last
week by Odessa.
Other headline games match
Conroe of AAA with Abilene of
AAAA, Pampa <f AAAA with
Vernon of AAA and Temple of
AAA with AAAA Baytown.
The Temple-Baytown game
will be extreme importance.
Many are now considering Tem-
ple the top team of the state, all
divisions included, and the battle
with Baytown will show whether
they are right.

touchdown. Kemp’s conversion
, We hope the Leopards will take due note tonight of the way in
which the Junior high school Panthers manhandled their Sherman
counterparts Thursday night. Coach Horace McCain’s boys soundly
defeated the Shermanites 34 to 7 in a game which developed into a
rough house in the latter stages. _
We are not expecting any miracles in tonight s tilt, but we
believe the Leopards are rapidly rounding into shape and will
give a good account of themselves against the highly favored
Bearcats. Sherman will be going all out in an attempt to prove
that last week’s upset by Carter Riverside was a fluke, so we
can look for them to pull out all the stops.
Jim Cory, sports editor of the Sherman Democrat, informed us
this morning that several of the Bearcats would probably see lim-
i ited action here tonight, but the rest of the ’Cats are fired up and
ready. One of the largest crowds of the 1952 season will probably
jam Leeper field for the tilt if the cool weather prevails and the
rain holds off. A large delegation of Sherman fans have already
J announced their intentions to follow their boys over here.
: : Cory is sold on the Bearcats’ promising junior fullback Stanley
; Phipps. “He runs like SMU’s Val Joe Walker, and in another year,
he should be one of the best ball carriers in Sherman high school
history;” asserts Jim. Phipps, a 180-pounder, is second to fleet
Bill Tom Helton as a ground gainer for the Bearcats, however.
■Helton has amassed 104 yards in 17 carries this season to 79 yards
for Phipps.
A counter proposal to Arch Ward’s suggestion that football
coaches be shifted to different schools each year has been made
by Marshall Turner, athletic director at Johns Hopkins unive r-
siti, “Why not move the players around? Then it would be a
real challenge to the coach with new material every year, said
Turner.
EXPLANATION — The Power Index provides a direct comparison of the relative strength of any two
teams for this season to date. Thus, a 50.0 team has been 10 scoring points stronger than a 40.0
team on their comparative records, in which average scoring margin has been weighed against aver-
age rating of opposition. However, this does not mean that a 50.0 team should defeat a 40.0 team
by 10 points in the future, because the ratings have not been adjusted for such important forecasting
factors as home team advantage, injuries, lineup changes, etc. Therefore, they are not to be con-
strued in any way as gambling information. The Dunkel system correlates records of all college
teams and was started in 1929. A

THEN CAME THE ARGUMENT—Braves’ Outfielder Bob Addis slides under Dodger Catcher
Roy Campanella to score in the Sth inning of game in Boston after Earl Torgeson hit to Jackie
Robinson at second. Umpire Frank Dascoli cal Is the runner safe and Campanella immediately
started an argument that eventually led to his banishment with Coach Cookie Lavagetto. Later
Dodgers in the dugout heckled Dascoli and they were banned. This proved to be the winning
run as the Braves took the game 4-3. The win slashed Brooklyn’s National league lead to a half

First Game of
Dixie Series
HOUSTON, Sept. 28 (A)—Bir-
mingham’s hammering Barons
had Houston one down today as
the two clubs prepared to wind
up their Texas stand in the Dixie
series.
The Barons, Southern associ-
ated representatives, whipped the
Buffs, Texas league pennant club,
7-3 last night in the opening
game of the battle tor the base-
ball title of Dixie.
The Barons pounded 12 hits,
four for extra bases, as they
shellacked four Buff hurlers. Jim
Pearsall led the Birmingham as-
sault with four hits in four trips
to the plate, batting in two runs.
Tonight Houston will rely on
Wilmer (Vinegar Bend) Mizell,
the rookie southpaw who had a
16-14 record for the season. Bir-
mingham will counter with Ralph
Bricker, big righthander who won
15 while losing nine.
Al Papai, the Texas league’s
leading pitcher (he won 23 games
during the regular season,) was
pounded for four runs in 51 in-
nings to be the loser. Mickey
Heafner, former big leaguer, was
knocked out of the box in 6%
innings but still got credit for
winning the game.
After tonight the clubs travel

The Boston Red Sox of the
American league lost their ma-

the Washington Senators. The
idle New York Yankees, facing
a five-game closing series with

The Yanks will pail the pen-

wins or Cleveland defeats would

two to play against Detroit to-
