On Duty in Korea
WITH THE FIRST MARINE
DIVISION in Korea — Marine
Master Sergeant George E. Burl-
age, husband of the former Willie
Mae Donnelly, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Delbert Donnelly of
Route 2, Gainesville, Texas, is
presently serving in Korea with
the First Marine division as com-
bat correspondent for Leather-
neck magazine, a national Marine
Corps monthly publication.
On special assignment from
Marine Corps headquarters
Washington, D. C., Sergeant
Burlage accompanies Leather-
neck units into battle to gather
first-hand information of battle
activity. When he obtains such
information, he moves into a
rear area and prepares articles
of interest that appear in the
magazine.
Since he is a Marine first and
a correspondent second, he goes
to the front armed to the hilt
and climbs the rugged terrain
the same as a rifleman. Often
hiking from fire fight to fire
fight, his experiences are not ex-
actly new to him—with over 12
years Marine Corps service, he
has spent half of it in the Pa-
cific area.
He was captured by the Jap-
anese in the Philippines during
World War II and interned for
three and’ one half years. Re-
turning to the U. S. after the
fall of Japan, he went aboard the
USS New Jersey for duty in the
Atlantic.
Since his assignment in Wash-
ington in 1949, he has made an
extensive tour of the European
area as a special correspondent.
He enlisted in the Marine
Corps immediately after gradua-
tion from Visalia, California,
Junior College in 1938.
His father. George S. Burlage,
lives in the Visalia rural district.
