The majestic old two-story Walker-Coryell House at 1208 South Main is one of the most im-
pressive residential structures in Boerne.
Built with limestone blocks in the early 1900's by W. F. Hayes, it was sold to George and Adele
Coryell in 1916. They, in turn, sold it to Mr. and Mrs. H. J. (Jake) Babbitt in 1930, and it was pur-
chased from Mr. Babbitt's sister by Mr. and Mrs. George Walker, the present owners, in 1953.
The Coryells raised seven children at their home on the SW corner of Bess and S. Main. They
were: George, Bert, Bonnie, Ellen, Doug, Adele, and Pyron.
Ellen, (Mrs. Art Roberts of San Antonio) remembers the beautiful wilderness area around the
homesite when she was growing up. The land consisted of 12 acres —lots 23 and 24 of the Wm.
Dietert Addition, and there were no streets there at that time.
The house had wood "galleries" around both the first and second stories. The yard was filled
with 500 year old live oak trees and the children had a huge treehouse in one of the live oaks. A
large barn and wagon shed were located out back. Mrs. Roberts distinctly remembers the big
fireplaces in the house.
Mr. Coryell operated a grocery store in Boerne, one location being next to Sonny Davis' Office
Supply and Print Shop. He sold the business to the Babbitt family at the time they purchased the
S. Main home, and the Coryells moved to a house on River Road.
The Coryells moved back to San Antonio in 1933. One son, Pyron, who works for City Public
Service in San Antonio, lives in Boerne. Two grandsons—David, son of George, and Joe Coryell,
Bert's son —also live in the Boerne area.
