While airplane models may be
made from an old shingle and
some brown paper, it was evident
st the outset that winners in the
national competition would use se-
lected materials, which were dif-
ficult to obtain. The wood must
be light if the plane la to be giv-
en any flight.
Arrangements were made to
supply those wbo enter into the
competition with materials on a
cost basis, and a small factory for
the preparation ot model airplane
parts wae set up in Detroit.
The demsnd thus far baa been
10 times what was anticipated.
Tbe chief element in the models
la balsa wood, which grows in
South America, chiefly in Ecua-
dor, and has half the weight of
cork. Tbe balsa is a fast grow-
ing tree, reaching 11 feet, from
the seed, in its first yesr.
Japanese imperial tissue, which
is almost as thin as cobwebs, al-
tho maintaining a stout resistance,
even to a atrong wind, is used to
cover the wings, and tail surfaces.
The ribs and part ot the frame-
work are of hair-thin bamboo and
the propellen is one of the prin-
cipal factors in the success or fail-
ure of the plane.__
A good propeller is shaved so
thin that light shines thru it.
The motor is a double or mul-
tiple-strand of rubber, running
from the front of the plane to the 1
rear. Which may be twisted — in
the case of larger models — as
many as 1200 turns.
