New Scientific Development
Promises Power Over
The Atom
(Copyright, 1028, by Science Service)
WASHINGTON, April 10.—The
highest electrical potential ever,
produced by man, over 5,000,000
volts, has been achieved in the
laboratory of Dr. Gregory Breit
and his associate. Dr. M. A. Tuve,
at the Department of Terrestrial
Magnetism of the Cagnegle Insti-
tution of Washington here.
Using the same apparatus, tbe
physicists have succeeded in ap-
plying a voltage of a million
volts to a vacuum tube equipped
with electrodes outside the evac-
That blacklist against famous
speakers which threatens a revo-
lution within the Daughters of
the American Revolution, was
confidential and should not have
been published by Mrs. Helen

R. Marvin of the Keymen of
America.
Marvin, who is a professional *
"radical-hunter," has helped dupe
certain officials of the DAR Into
"this unworthy enterprise" of re-
viving post-war "spy psychology.''

ment is entitled "Our Threatened

patriotism does not suit Marvin

such as sodium, potassium, etc.,
and thus proved transmutation
of elements possible. What is
now needed is heavier artillery
and that is the object of Dr.
Breit's work.
Electrons such as given off
from any electric light filament
are immensely speeded up by
high voltage current, but they
are light in weight. More “beet”
is needed, so alpha particles,
which are speeding helium atoms,
are projected against the nucleus
being besieged. When given off
from radium these alpha parti-
cles are already moving at the
speed that would be imparted by
some 3,800,000 volts.
More Power Yet. '
The Carnegie Institution physi-
eists intend eventually to give
them another shove with 5.000,-
000 or more volts and obtain a
more powerful bombardment than
radium can produce. Even speed- |
ler and weightier projectiles will
be obtained by similarly boosting
the speeding bare hearts of at-
oms from which the electrons
have been stripped.
By increasing in size the pres-
ett apparatus and by feeding the
voltages from one uhe into an-
other, It may be possible to ob-
tain in future years voltages of
many times the 5,000,000 now
achieved. When 30,000,000 volts
are produced and applied, some
of the moot questions in physics
probably will be settled.
