"I was asked by the govern-
ment to submit a bid on my
land,” Bailey said. “I put it in
at 1815,000. The government
asked me if I would reduce the
price to 1350,000 and I agreed.
“Two other representatives
came to Fort Worth lter. They
did not pay me the courtesy of
calling on me but asked other
real estate dealers what they
thought the land was worth.
Then I was notified that the
government wanted the land for
1225,000.
“I offered thru the Associa-
tion of Commerce to submit the
matter to an appraisal commit-
tee of the Fort Worth Real Es-
tate Board and to abide by Its
decision if the government
would agree likewise. The offer
was turned down this week.”

His critics had already be-
gun to see the light—that Jen-

the business district and the
populous Mouth Side.
Later Bailey made the city a

open Tenth street between Jen-

At the time Bailey was work-

him, the city pound stood whers

necessary for owners of 15 to

to get their straying charges

On Dec. 14, 1885 Balley
bought all of the land between
Eight and Thirteenth on both
aide* of Jennings and extend-
ing to Monroe, with the exeep-
tion of the present poet office
alto, for 150,00*.
It all waa a part of the Hyde
Jennings estate and waa toM by
hla widow, Mrs. Sarah 0, Jen
nings.
A few months later Bailor
paid 133,000 for the poet offiee
block.
It waa considered by most
persons as a bad bargain of the
worst sort for Balley, A year
later he sold the same block to
leave Fort Worth 11:30 p. m.,
instead of 10:30 p. m., arriving
Pecos 1:15 p. m., instead of
1:30, and will carry thru sleepers
from Fort Wofth to Abilene, ,
Sweetwater and Big Spring. By
its • later departure, passengers
from Fort Worth may spend an
evening at home and yet have
morning arrival at destination.
This also enables West Texas
people to secure later editions of
, newspapers and mail posted an
hour later in the evening.
The schedule of Train No. 3
will be shortened one hour and
15 minutes between Fort Worth I
and Big Spring. The departing
time will be same as now, 9:45,
but will reach Big Spring 6:15
p. m. Instead of 7:45 p. m.
To Leave 7 A. M.
Eastbound Train 10 will leave
’Big Spring 7 a. m., instead of
12:05 a. m., arriving Fort Worth
3 p. m., connecting with the
Sunshine Special and Louisiana
Limited.
Train 4 will leave Big Spring
11 a. m., instead of 9:30 a. m.,
arriving at Fort Worth 6:30
p. m. Running time will be
shortened one and one-half
hours.
TrAins 3, 4, 9 and 10 will af-
ford West Texas daylight double
service both ways.
A local train will also be op-
erated leaving Pecos 3 p. m., ar-
riving Big Spring 6:30 p. m.,
better serving the adjacent oil
field travel.
Sunshine (Not Affected.
No changes are being made in
the schedule of the three famus
trains. "The Texan,” “Sunshine
Special” and "Louisiana Limited."
While the schedule from Fort
Worth to Lubbock, Plainview and
Amarillo over the route of the
Texas & Pacific . Railway to
Sweetwater, thence the Santa Fe,
is being shortened Sunday, May
19, the time will be further
shortened June 9, whereby pas-
sengers will be able to leave Fort
Worth 9:45 p. m. in thru sleep-
ing cars for Lubbock and Ama-
rillo, arriving Lubbock 7:15
a. m., instead of 8:10 a. m. as
at present, with-corresponding re-
duction to other points in the
