Grossed Waterways
Waterways are being shaped ‘
now in the Grandview area so
that a good seedbed may be
prepared before sprigging them
to bermudagrass in early
spring of 1969.
After shaping a waterway,
the former should begin pre-
paring a seedbed by flat break-
ing or by bedding and re-
bedding. This will allow foil
and winter rains to soak in
and mellow the soil.

Contour Farming
Contour farming, or running
the rows parallel to the ter-
race, is a'conservation prac-
tice from which many farmers
realize important benefits.
r Rows which are run on the
contour, following the terrace,
catch and hold runoff water.
This allows” more water to
soak into the soil arid be
stored for later use.
Since most Blackland soils
are high in day content, the
soil particles swell up, or en-
large, soon after a rain shower
begins. This quickly reduces
the rate that water will soak
into the soil. Thus, if water
is not slowed down from its
movement downhill, it will
not get much of a chance to be
absorbed into the soil.
A reduction in soil erosion
is another reason why formers
in the Nolan-Aquilla and Ellis
Prairie Soil and Water Con-
servation Districts run rows
parallel to terraces. Contour
rows and terraces prevent
water from running off too
quickly and reduce the amount
of sou and soil nutrients be-
ing washed from the field.
Contour forming also helps
to reduce water pollution in
rivers and lakes downstream.
This type of conservation
practice not only benefits
farmers but also increases the
