J. Barbain
■ Brown and Meaney are eaid to
run an oil stock brokerage house.
Barham is a youth of only 29.
Their scheme, It is alleged, waa
to send cheap foantaia pens by
express, addressed to dead persons,
with 35 to be collected on deliv-
ery. The pens are said to have ac-
tually ooet about (5c each.
Names of the pereons to whom
the pens were eent were obtained,
the government officials say, from
death notices in newspapers.
Barham made a statement, say-
tog he wae employed by Brown to
cilp the death notices, send the
pens, and receive and deposit the
money which the express company
collected.
The theory was, he said, that
the pens would be accepted and
paid for by the relatives of the
dead persons to whom they were
ddressed.
It didn’t work out very well,
however, as Barham said he sent
out 79 pens and got only three re-
mittances. Most of the shipments
were returned here, according to
expreae company records.
Maaaey was arrested Tuesday
afternoon and made 33,599 bo cd.
Barham atoo was bonded.
Artest of Brown was expected
Wednesday.
Uss of the mails entered into
the scheme because the three re-
mittances Barham got were by
