Also 88 years old, Mr. Lott
still goes to the office every day-
although his son, David Hix
Lott, runs the business. Mr.
Lott is a founder and original
director of the Mineola Federal
Savings and Loan Association.
It wasn’t until after high
school that Howard and Vivian
became interested in one
another. “He would come over ,
to where my friends and I were
and talk to us,” remembers
Mrs. Lott. “I thought he was
interested in another girl,” she
still claims today. However, it
was Vivian who had caught
Howard's eye. They began
dating and were married two
years later. The Lotts will
celebrate their 66th wedding
anniversary this February.
During those early years,
young people partied on Friday
nights. The boy would pick up
his date and everyone would
meet at a designated home
where they sang and played
games. “The parents were
there too," remembered Mrs.
Lott, “and we were home by 10
p.m."
Another Friday night acti-
vity was to go downtown and
listen to bind concerto. There
was a water well in the middle
of town with a band stand built
around it The City Bind, in
which Mr. Lott played slide
trombone, performed for the
public on weekends.
On Saturdays the kids would
go horseback riding, and after
offered was Latin, Greek,
History, English and Math.
According to Mrs. Lott, the
athletic program consisted of
girls basketball and boys
baseball. “We didn't have any
outside school activities,” said
Mrs. Lott. “We went to school
and studied and that is all.
There were no school colors and
nomascot."
Students were required to
buy their own books and a
tuition of $6 a month was
charged to those who attended
school. Not having the money
to finish his high school
education, Howard Lott was
forced to quit school in the
eleventh grade and go to work.
Mr. Lott first went to work
at Perkins Dry Goods store,
then obtained a job selling
tickets for the Texas and
