Whenever the Legislature
adjourns and goes home, the
most visible official left in
Austin is the Governor.
Since the lawmakers' de-
parture June 2, Clements
has been involved in politi-
cal snipings on several
fronts.
He has tangled with:
—Attorney General Mark
White over a recent district
judge's ruling that the state
cannot regulate church-
operated children’s homes,
the latest event in the on-
going case of evangelist Les-
ter Roloff. Clements, wh
was supported by Roloff in
the *78 campaign, has said
he is pleased with the deci-
sion and wants Mark White
to leave it alone. White will
probably appeal the ruling
as overbroad, saying it is not
right “to put the word
church on a corporate char-
ter and be exempt from the
law."
—Tyler State Sen. Peyton
McKnight over the busted
deal to trade state land In
West Texas for Big Bend
acreage to create a state
park. Clemente accused Mc-
Knight of spoiling the swap,
and McKnight retorted the
swap needed spoiling. Me-
Knight is also thinking about
running for governor against
Clements in 1982.

ent’s appointees to the Tex-
as Real Estate Commission,
Dr. Richard E Box. Clem-
ents accused Doggett of
