support for their legislative pro-

Frank Fernbach, an economist

plans to publicize this May 4 show
more than the last one. In addi-
tion to the publicity from The
Dallas Craftsman and tymounce-
ments at the meetings^ this same
committee is asking all of our
stewards to post film posters in
the toolhouses or any other ap-
propriate place at their jobs.
Someone will distribute the posters
to the stewards at a future meet-
ing.
The results of the question-
naires, which were used in the re-
cent bricklayers’ survey, will be
given to the membership Friday
night, April 13. Many members
j have exemplified a great deal of
intelligence in the answers of their
questionnaire.

Last Friday night, the brother
members had the opportunity to
evaluate our union meetings. The
AFCIO film, “Heart of the
Union,” demonstrated to the mem-
bers, who attended, the wrong and
the right ways of participating
in a meeting. The members were
able to judge the characteristics
of our meetings from an objective
viewpoint. I

three "open-shop” drive-ins.
Since the members enthusias-
tically approved of the above film,
our union is planning to show a
film on parilamentary procedure.
This show is scheduled for May
4, 1962. This film will show and
explain the functions of the chair-
man, the purpose and correct man-
nei of presenting a motion, an
amendment, point of order, and
other points up to and including
the motion for adjournment.

He added, however, that labor
would be happier if “there was
a little more reciprocity on the
part of rural legislators in an ef-
fort to understand the problems
of city people.”
‘I would be less than honest,”
he continued, “if I did not say the
almost universal, rural opposition
to the creation of a Department
of Urban Affairs is harmful to
what should be a mutual interest 1
in each other’s problems."

News Conference, AFL-CIO pub-
lic service program broadcast by
th*' Mutual network.
The AFL-CIO economist said
labor generally would support the
“broad outlines” of the Kennedy
Administration’s farm bill, now
before Congress. The three basic
kjectives of the measure, h
stud, are to balance agricultural
production with consumer needs,
at nome. and abroad; to make ef-
fective use of millions of acres of
unneeded crop land by opening
them up, for example, to recrea-
tonal facilities; and tp “attack
the extreme rural poverty whicn
eists."
As citizens, Fernbach observed,
trade unionists have a big stake
in farm prosperity to assure ample
production of food and fiber not
only for American consumption
but as “weapons in the battle
against totalitarian systems."
He saw no conflict of interest
between labor’s support of pro-
grams to raise the living stand-
ards and conditions of farm
workers and the possibility that
those programs would lead to
higher prices for trade unionists
as consumers.
