Parly Campaign Funds
Surprising is the announcement in the official reports
made by the two political parties. The Democrats, tradition-
filly the poorer party, have spent over $200,000 more than the
Republicans, or half as much again.
Before 1896 the two parties differed little either in prin-
ciple or in campaign money. Bryan and free silver scared the
wealthy Democratic contributors and the party entered on a

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
THE WEATHER was teasingly
mild for March when Lydia came

Theo and Raphael and Kirby had
come to the country. It had been
an uneventful afternoon visit, with
Kirby pleasantly silent and Ra-
phael and Theo volubly charming.
From the visit Lydia took the im-
pression that Theo was like a per-
son 3lowly thawing. Though grace-
ful and exquisitely dressed as al-
ways, her gestures had seemed
less affected, herjperfect little face
beneath the short silvery hair
more expressive. Kirby, silent,
had seemed curiously like a large,
benevolent matriarch when she
looked at her • mother. On these
three, Lydia had thought, time
pressed, - too, for rushing tgward
them was that inevitable day"when
Raphael would go back to his own
country and his own people and
Theo would look wenderingly from
her daughter to her husband.
Today Lydia arrived at the hotel
where Kirby had told her to meet
her early, and to absorb the sun
waited outside. Something Kirby
had said once came back to her,
“that Park Avenue on a sunny
afternoon is a beautiful sight”
But her thoughts were crowded
and inconclusive. She wished that
Chris had come and she wondered
if Kirby had anything of impor-
tance to tell her. She would not
admit that she was tired, her cour-
age ebbing. ... It was March and
Chris was still at home, still hav-

Teleran
Teleran is a new word destined to become within a few
years as commonplace as telephone or telegraph. It is a hybrid
word derived from "television radar air navigation.” It is as
yet little known but described as the "most important single ;
electronics marvel to come out of the war.” It has only recent-
ly been announced by the Radio Corporation of America.
By means of a ground radar unit, information is collected
pictorially. The pilot with a glance at his television screen
can see the runways, towers, buildings, hills, the entire geo-
graphic layout and all obstructions. Traffic control directions
/ 53 zeli:
and meteorological data are instantly available. He becomes
informed of the sky, the earth, the position of his own plane
and that of other planes within a far radius.
This is teleran, word of new magic. Queer isn’t it that this
wonder, devised to safeguard human life, was born out of the
' science of killing?
