About this time of the year many
farmers burn their pastures, thinking
to improve them fol' the followinE
year, und are unaware of tin* damage
they are doing.
As all experimental work with
which he is familiar shows this to be
true, C. T. Dowell, director and dean
of agriculture of the Oklahoma A. &
M. College, makes this statement and
emphasizes the fact that pastures
should not be burnd. It is true, he
says, that burning off the old grass
enables one to see the grass better
when it comes in the spring, which
leads some to think that better pas-
titres result. However, this is only an
apparent, not a real benefit.
There is considerable food value in
old grass and it should be left lor the
live stock during the winter. Decom-
position of the grass adds humus to
the soil, thereby increasing its water
holding properties and putting the sod
in better condition otherwise.
If the sod is fairly heavy, burning
off is likely to do two things: It may
destroy the grass roots, to some ex-
tent. especially if the burning is done
in dry weather, and it may destroy the
vitality of some of the gruss seeds and
prevent their coming up in the spring
Furthermore, burning off grass ul
lows a greater erosion of the pasture
in the winter, particularly during tli.
heavy rains in the spring. A great
amount of water is allowed to run off.
not only eroding the pasture but les-
sening the water suply in the soil for
the grass.
