but they retained a neater appearance.
The cotton bagging also proved itself
more resistant in the breaking strength
tests. I
This is incontestable evidence, and
it is of great value. When we get
around to the production of cotton
bagging at a lower price than jute
costs or attain to an equality in price,
the cotton-producing states will have
taken some of the edge off their prob-
lem. By wrapping cotton in its own I
hide, so to speak, the South will be 11
able to take money out of one pocket
and put it into the other. The sooner
we get to that the greater will be the
return from our major industry.

Sure-Bearing Orchards
Few fruit trees have been planted
in many years, and the supply of
home-grown peaches, plums, pears,
berries, figs and other fruits is far
below the demand.
People will go twenty miles to get
fresh fruit. The grower does not have
to take it to market.
Back yards will produce enough]
fruit for town homes. Why not raise
abundance of fruit at home

(Dallas News)
Whenever cotton gets into trouble,
especially in a year of overproduction,
among the means suggested of in-
creasing use of the staple that of
dressing it in a coat of its own fiber
has always been presented. But that
suggestion hasn't yielded much up to
this time. The argument for use of
cotton bagging in preference to jute
has frequently been offset by ’he sup-
portable argument that jute is the less
costly covering, and by less support-
able contention that it is the more
durable. Those who have taken neu-
tral ground in the matter have said
that cotton bagging will be preferable
whenever the means of fabricating it
from cheaper grades of cotton have
been perfected.
Some ground of certainty has been
reached, however, as a result of a
by many of the high powered experts.
I stand four square for equal rights to
all, with special privileges to none. I
will not be influenced by click or clan,
or any other sources in executing offi-
cial duties. I will owe my alliance to
the good common people, and not to
one or two, or more limited number of
despotic characters who would consid-
er any man unfit for sheriff who they
could not use or influence to favor
them at the expense of others, or to
crush and humiliate some unfortunate.
In espousing my candidacy, no one
can truthfully accuse me of any dis-
reputable business in my past life, or
conduct that any high-minded citizen
would be ashamed of. I was born and
raised on my father's plantation on
the Brazos river in Brazoria county. I
am a decendant of as good and re
spectable people as ever trod Texas
soil, and I am proud of my ancestors,
and they would be proud of me if they
were living I am an ex-student of
the A * M. College and Baylor Uni-
versity. If the good people do not
wish to make a change in the sheriff’s
office, and thereby defeat the prin-
ciples enunciated in my platform. I
will accept their verdict as an unjust
reprimand and will not change my
mind or lose my self respect, but will
go down in defeat with these prin-
ciples that I will ever cherish and de-
fend as being just, logical, equitable
and fair. If the good people approve
of my platform and elect me, I will be
a follower of the precepts of the law
and will execute the same with scrup-
upon than in any other office. Many
of the sheriffs often make the law, as
the occasion seems to suit their fancy,
more than they are followers of the
law This is why the sheriffs are often
and appropriately dubbed, “The Law."
In other words, they employ this of-!
ficial power to favor some at the ex-
pense of others; or to make might
auspiciously right, therefore, ignore
the fact that the same law was made,
to fit the strong as well as it was
made to fit the weak. Therefore, it
will place the other aspirants in this
race in a superlatively ridiculous at-
titude at this late date to even say,
like the parrot, "Me Too.”
So now, my friends, if I am nomi-
nated for the sheriff’s office during1
the ensuing White Man's Union pri- j
maries to be held April 28, and I be- 1
Heve beyond any questionable doubt i
that I will be, upon the fundamental ,
principles herein set forth, I shall 1
deem it a compliment and honor to'
win a victory over such good citizens
as heretofore named, but who are not
specifically qualified to make the kind
of sheriff that I am so peculiarly quali-
fied and fitted for, which will be to the
entire satisfaction to all who want law
enforcement with impartiality, and
with credit to myself. With this decla-
ration I hereby submit my candidacy
for your vote, your moral and influen-
tial support in espousing the cause ’
for which you and I jointly stand
hand in hand for a righteous and lofty
cause, all of which I will more parti-
cularly discuss in my speeches to be '
made later on at the proper time.
Respectfully submittted herewith, I
propose to win this race on my merits
as a reputable man and citizen, with
due regards to the other candidates
who are better fitted for some other
vocation. I subscribe my name hereto]
as a candidate for the office of sheriff
of Matagorda County. Texas.
