in the way of traffic.
Beware what lurks
beneath the blooms.
While bluebonnets cre-
ate a scenic drive, they
also create a cool and
shady haven for critters
like rattlesnakes and
fire ants that can be
dangerous to humans.
Look around before
placing your child in
a bed of bluebonnets
to avoid putting them
in harm’s way; or seek
out a safe place to
capture the photo like
the Lady Bird Johnson
Wildflower Center in
Austin.
Bluebonnets dominate the show of wildflowers on area roadsides. Experts anticipate a
greater number of blooms and a longer blooming season than the region has seen in
recent years.
A wet spring has
resulted in an early
showing of bluebon-
nets along Texas
roadsides, and though
the vibrant blossoms
beckon passers-by to
stop and snap a photo,
officials try to remind
the public that there
are number of hazards
to be aware of while
admiring the blooms.
The greatest fear as-
sociated with the state
flower may be the one
to fear the least. De-
spite popular belief, it
is not illegal to pick a
bluebonnet from the
roadside, according to
a press release from
the Texas Department
of Public Safety.
While picking a few
bluebonnets won’t get
you arrested, remov-
ing large patches of
them from roadsides,
and trespassing on pri-
vate property could,
so refraining from
excessive removal
of bluebonnets, and
awareness of public
and private property
lines is wise.
Many safety issues
may also present
themselves while seek-
ing that perfect photo.
Bluebonnets can be
found in a number of
places, but the lure of
the Texas roadside is
undeniable. If pulling
over to capture that
classic kid-in-the-blue-
bonnets, dog-in-the
bluebonnets, or even
an adult-in-the-blue-
bonnets snapshot,
drivers should make
sure that they are able
to safely pull off of the
road and not put their
vehicle or themselves

At Dell Children’s Medical Center, we care for body, mind and spirit. It’s why our care plans include
innovative programs like art therapy, music therapy, color therapy and pet therapy. We have videogames
to keep kids entertained when it’s hot outside and a healing garden to play in when it cools off. Around
here, every patient gets expert care and a healthy dose of playtime. Because that’s the human thing to do.

“If they can’t find a
safe place, come to the
Wildflower Center.”
If the photo isn’t the
objective, and simply
admiring the beauty of
what is expected to be
a bountiful and longer-
than-usual bluebonnet
season, watch your
step. In order for blue-
bonnets to seed and
for the public to enjoy
their wonder for years
to come, they need to
be able to progress
through their natural
lifecycle, so try not to
step on, crush, or other-
wise damage them.

The Lady Bird John-
son Wildflower Cen-
ter maintains a 5,000
square foot bluebonnet
field that is consid-
ered a safe spot for
photo taking, and is
frequented by visitors
annually.
“It’s alarming that
families stop along the
roadside to get their
pictures, especially
if they have little
ones,” said Andrea De-
Long-Amaya, director
of horticulture at the
Wildflower Center in
an interview with the
Houston Chronicle.
