The Elgin-McDade Service
Unit of Girl Scouts of Central
Texas hosted their annual pine-
wood derby on Saturday at the
First United Methodist Church
fellowship hall, where scouts
displayed their talents in the
areas of design and dessert.
More than twenty scouts en-
tered into the pinewood derby,
where the girls raced their
hand-made wooden cars down a
metal track in hopes of winning
a medal. Beyond the need for
speed, the girls had an oppor-
tunity to compete in the area
of design where they showed
no limit to the imagination
with cars covered in glitter and
paint, and one that resembled
two fried eggs on wheels.
First place in the Daisy race
went to Cameron T., Madison
H. placed first in Brownies, and
Emily M. won the top spot for
Juniors. Dylan M. won first for
Cadettes and Logan M. placed
first in Friends and Family.
The food theme went beyond
the track and into one of the
fundraisers that took place as
part of Saturday’s event, as chil-
dren and adults entered a vari-
ety of baked and frozen goods
into a dessert contest. Cookies,
cakes, brownies and even ice
cream were represented, as three

judges sampled more than two
dozen desserts to determine win-
ners in the adult and children’s
categories. Fallon Jones’ diablo
cupcakes placed first in the adult
dessert category, and Georgia
R. took the top spot in children’s
submissions with a confetti cup-
cake cone. All desserts were por-
tioned and placed for sale.
In addition to bake sale prof-
its, a silent auction took place
to raise money for Girl Scouts.
Proceeds from the both events
benefited Friends of Girl Scout-
ing, a non-profit organization
that provides funding for Girl
Scouts and scouting programs
including scholarships for Girl
Scouts to attend camp.
There will be lots to do, like
/ hayrides
/ train rides
✓ visit animals
✓ navigate mazes
/ eat sno-cones
/ enjoy fellowship with your church family.
