with annexation and zoning

on their site plan, and work-

Agrarian communities are
relatively new concepts in
Texas, and The Elgin Agrar-
ian Community is certainly
the first of its kind in Cen-
tral Texas. Beyond planning,
there is a lot of work that has
to happen before the cooper-

in.

Ground will soon break for
the Elgin Agrarian Commu-
nity (EACO), a housing de-
velopment community that
will be built on the Mary
Christian Burleson home-
stead off of Lexingtion near
downtown Elgin.
The community is a coop-
erative development where
buyers purchase a home on
the grounds, but the pur-
chase price, along with home-
owner’s association dues
entitle the buyer to shares in
a community farm and other
amenities offered on the site.

teer coordinator. Four
paying positions are
currently open at the
shelter, which include
an opening for shelter
manager, two field po-
sitions, and a kennel
tenant. They are cur-
rently in the interview
stages for two of the
four positions.
“We are also always
looking for more volun-
teers,” said Thompson.
“Their main job would
will be mixed-use coopera-
tive to include such things as
a five acre certified-organic
farm, an agricultural educa-
tional center, yoga facilities,
a brewery as well as bike and
walking trails.
The development was re-
cently annexed, zoning was
recently changed to have
the development labeled as
a planned development dis-
trict to allow flexibility in
what is built on the property.
And with those changes, the
development, which has
been in the planning phases
for some time is nearing re-
ality.
Pegasis Planning and De-
velopment of Austin is plan-
be animal enrichment
and working with the
animal’s minds, keep-
ing them occupied and
giving them things to
do during the day. We
have a couple of vol-
unteers who walk the
dogs, but that’s it. We
are looking for more to
come out and do those
things.”
In addition to the
need for repairs and
the staffing shortage
at the shelter, con-
cern was voiced at a
Bastrop County Com-
missioner’s meeting
on April 25 by former
shelter employee Viv-
ian Hemme over the
maintenance and man-
agement of the shelter.
