northeast of Elgin in
September. On Sun-
day afternoons, they
have explored com-
munities all around
Elgin. This last Sun-
day, besides lunch
with a congregation
family at Type, they
learned about Adina.
Adina is a beautiful
name for a tranquil
area on the Yegua
Creek in Lee County.
The founder of
Adina was R. L. Cain,
who was born in 1842
in Jasper, Alabama.
He came to what be-
came Adina, Texas, in
1866 after four years
of service in the Civil
War. Among the other
founding families that
joined him were the

Sandra Janette
Thompson, age 67,
of Elgin passed away
with her family by her
side Wednesday, Nov.
16, 2016.
Janette was born
Dec. 13, 1948, in
Uvalde, Texas, to Tru-
ett and Arvie Herron.
After being a dedi-
cated Army wife for
20 years, her husband,
David, retired from
the military. They
first moved to Austin
then Cedar Park and
eventually found their
home in Elgin, where
Janette worked for 15
years before retiring
last year.
Janette was always
proudly active in her
sons’ lives. She was
a Cub Scout Leader,
T-Ball Coach and ref-
eree. She and David
would travel to see
sporting events, and
Beasleys and Crad-
docks.
The community
was largely spared
the violence of the
notch-cutter outlaws
that plagued the area
closer to Blue and Mc-
Dade in the 1870s, but
not entirely.
Outlaws shot William
B. Craddock in the
back in 1875 when he
was on his way home
after testifying about
the cattle rustling in
Bastrop County.
Cattle rustling was
especially serious
because the animals
represented currency
in a day before banks
came into use. The
oxen pulling Crad-
dock’s wagon brought
William’s dead body
home by themselves.

which a number of
outlaws were hanged
