During the public hear-
ing portion of the meet-
ing for the budget and tax
rate discussion, District
Chief Financial Officer
Debra George explained
that property value totals
winds demolished much of Rock-
port and Port Aransas, the contin-
ued rainfall may end up costing
more. Damage estimates before
Harvey made landfall were already
projected to be between $1-2 bil-
lion, before the storm stalled out
over Victoria and drenched Hous-
ton.
A timeline of Harvey’s existence:
—Aug. 17 The name Harvey is
assigned to a tropical storm in the
Caribbean.
—Aug. 23 Harvey, after being
downgraded to a tropical wave, re-
generates into a tropical depression.
—Aug. 24 Harvey becomes a hur-
ricane about 325 miles southeast of
Port O’Connor.
—Aug. 25 Harvey is now a Cat-
egory 3 hurricane about 75 miles
from Corpus Christi. Less than six
hours later, Harvey has strength-
ened into a Category 4 storm, just
45 miles from the Texas coast.

RECENT WEATHER
Elgin received 8-14 inches
of rainfall over the week-
end from Hurricane Harvey.
Clouds will stay in the area
for most of the week, keep-
ing temperatures in the upper
70s and low 80s until Friday,
when the sun and warmer
temperatures in the upper
80s and low 90s return for
the weekend.
had increased 15 percent
more than the previous
year, which would gener-
ate $600,000 more for the
yearly budget.
George cautioned that
while funds from local taxes
were increasing, the amount
of funds the district would
vided the interior of Haven
into three areas. Half of the
building is dedicated to a
Traditional Quick Stop and
the other half is a Cafe and
Bar with tables for inside
dining. There also looks to
be a screened in back porch
area.
“We have a cafe over here
that will have barbeque, in-
cluding brisket, dinosaur
of some areas, and closed down a
stretch of Highway 71.
Some local businesses decided to
close on Saturday due to the heavy
rain, and Elgin ISD cancelled
school on Monday due to unsafe
driving conditions.
Bastrop County closed all of its
offices Monday also, and resched-
uled a commissioners court meeting
for Tuesday afternoon.
As the remnants of Harvey dis-
sipate this week, the worst of the
damage from the storm may still
be coming as Houston is already
flooded with still more rainfall pro-
jected for the over-saturated city.

Elgin is drying out after Hurricane
Harvey soaked much of central and
south Texas this weekend.
The worst of Harvey hit Rockport
as a Category 4 Hurricane late Fri-
day night, the worst to hit the Texas
coast since Carla in 1961.
Outer bands from the storm
dumped anywhere from eight to 14
inches in the Elgin area from Fri-
day morning to Monday morning,
according to the National Weather
Service.
There was minor flooding on
a few roads in Elgin, including
County Line Road near the inter-
section of Highway 290 East.
Elgin Police Department had a
few calls for downed trees and lines
and debris in the roadway, but only
one call to help a car that drove
around a barricade and got stuck in
a ditch on County Line Road early
Sunday morning.
Bastrop County Sheriff’s office
reported that eight people had been
arrested for driving around barri-
cades on flooded roads as of Sat-
urday. The Class B misdemeanor
carries jail time.
Bastrop and Smithville received
much more rainfall, causing flood-
ing along the Colorado River.
La Grange got the worst of the
area, with more than 30 inches of
rainfall, which forces officials there
to call for a mandatory evacuation
