some serious questions,”
Brannon recalled.
“I started reading scrip-
ture and that didn’t really
help. But it was a good
start. I was in the first Gulf
War back in the 1990s
and we were enforcing
sanctions against Saddam
Hussein at the time, have

asks, ‘Why?’
Jesus tells us to be peace-
makers so I prayed at that
time that the leaders were
going to be wise in their
use of force.”
When his enlistment pe-
riod was up in 1996, Bran-
non started school with an
aim at getting into teach-
ing. Living with family
in Yorktown, near Victo-
ria, Brannon began to at-
tend an ELCA Lutheran
church.

“The pastors I met had
engaging sermons, some-
times highly technical,
and I liked that. They fo-
cused on the Gospel and
Grace and the joy of a life
filled with Christ,” Bran-
non explained.
At Texas State Univer-
sity, Brannon became
involved in a Lutheran
focused campus ministry.
The mentoring relation
that Brannon had with
the campus minister, the
Chaplain, made it clear
that ministry would be the
path Brannon would fol-
low.
So Brannon enrolled in
the Lutheran Seminary
Project In The Southwest
(LSPS) for its focus on
multicultural teaching.

Several months ago,
Pastor Sam Brannon took
over at St. Peters ELCA.
St. Peters has had and “in-
terim” with Pastor Debbie
Schultze for several years.
Her term ended this last
spring. Pastor Brannon
has been preaching for a
couple months now and
brings a new vitality to St
Peters.
Brannon grew up in Cen-
tral Texas and Houston.
After high school, Sam
was looking for a break
from academics so he
joined the Navy.
“I remember my first
day in the Navy waking
up with some guy yelling
at us to get up thinking all
my friends are waking up
in dorm rooms,” Brannon
said.
Brannon stayed in the
Navy for five years. He
was with the 7th Fleet sta-
tioned first on Guam and
then in the Sea of Japan.
In the last couple years
of enlistment, Brannon
started reading the Bible.
Up to that point he had
not had much of a church
life. Events and pressures
of being in the armed
services and looking at
his lifestyle set him on a
course of looking for an-
swers.
“I started considering
questions about the ulti-
mate realities of life and
