The Kimbro Free Church, the
predecessor to the Elgin Evangel-
ical Free Church, was established
around 1900 by a group of settlers
from Sweden, and a cemetery was
built near the church. In 1944, the
church was destroyed by a tornado,
and they rebuilt the church building.
However, according to Christian-
son, soldiers returning from World
War II didn’t come back to the
farms around Kimbro. As a result,

In the middle of a cornfield, on an
acre of land on Manda Road off of
FM 1100, sits a collection of around
50 gravestones, some dating back as
far as 1903.
The church has long been moved
from this site; there are no buildings
nearby, save for a few houses down
the road in either direction.
Although the Kimbro Cemetery is
mostly tended by volunteers now,
an organization is helping to ensure
that there will always be financial
support to make sure it continues to
look its best.
In 2001, a group of concerned in-
dividuals founded the Evangelical
Free Church Cemeteries Associa-
tion, which administers an endow-
ment to help support two rural
cemeteries in the area: the Kimbro
cemetery, owned by Elgin Evangel-
ical Free Church, and the Decker
cemetery between Manor and Aus-
tin, owned by the First Evangelical
Free Church in Austin. The inter-
est from the endowment is used to
pay for the maintenance of these
cemeteries, according to Jim Chris-
tianson, one of the founders of the
association.
Each year, the association meets
on the first Sunday in August to
elect new officers and make deci-
sions about the endowments. The
latest meeting was on August 5.
According to Christianson, since

Pastor Terry Kennedy mows and
maintains the Kimbro cemetery.
When Kennedy cuts the grass, he
passes another notable grave, a
marker worn down by age topped
with a stone bird. The grave belongs
to Millicent Carlson, born July 27,
1935. Millicent was the daughter of
the pastor at the time, and accord-
ing to Kennedy, she was born with
physical problems and died on July
4, 1945.
“They say she could sing like an
angel, but the Lord took her when
she was nine years old,” Kennedy
said. “It was a hard thing for every-
body in the church at that time.”
Anyone who is a member of Elgin
Evangelical Free Church can have a
free plot at the cemetery, according
to Kennedy. Currently, the church is
working on new policies and coming
up with prices so that anyone who
wants to can be buried there.
“There’s a wide spread of family
influence from the families that are
there,” Lind said. “There’s quite a
bit of interest in keeping the cem-
etery, not just by the church people
but the families who are part of
those families are buried there.”
