Many folk, who are unfamiliar

The truth is that when congress
authorizes one of the government de-
partments, like that of the navy or
the interior, to proceed with some big
undertaking, such as laying down

..MORRIS SHERRARD'S LEG IOS
------ SPEECH ------------
Sen. Morris Sheppard is the author of
the 18th amendment. He is the joint au-
thor of the 19th amendment. He-was re-
nominated in July by a majority of 50,000.
His American Legion convention speech
sounded a new departure. He discussed
the unemployment situation and "the ills
of industry and farming.”
He declared that one of the means of pro-
moting American prosperity was to in-
crase individual ownership of homes and .
industry and urge "that workmen be made-
part-owners in the business in which they
■were employed.” Decentralization of indus-
try into a number of smaller units also rec-
ommended by the senior senator as an aid
to prosperity and in bettering employment
conditions. He attacked the system “where-
by 40 per cent of the nation’s wealth was
placed in the hands of the two per cent of
its population while 65 per cent of the
population controlled only 15 per. cent.”
He appealed to the American Legion to
rededicate itself to world peace and stated
that unless the United States joined in the
movement “it would be a menace to itself
and the world.” There is a general elec-
tion coming in November, Democratic lead-
ers the country over are hopeful that they
well:capture both houses of the new con-
gress. It would be another load for the
donkey. There will be a presidential el-
ection in 1932. A Republican president
and a Democratic congress would furnish
ideal copy makers but would it be possible
for a constructive legislation program .to
be put over by the law-maker and given the
approval of the president?
Long before the coming of 1932 there
will be an upgrade prosperity movement ill
the United States. Truth is the Republi-
cans would be in great good luck if they

-THIS IS CATTAIN COSTE’S DAY”
Col. Charles A. Lindbergh is the king
— sportsman as. well as an ace of the, first
conquerors of theParis-New York air.
Capt. Coste and Maurice Bellonte are air-
way. In other words they accomplished
the first westward airplane flight across
the North Atlantic from Europe to New
. York. .They made it in just 37 hours, 18
minutes and 30 seconds after they took
off from Paris. According to cablegrams
Paris celebrated "in a midnight dance of
joy.” Col. Charles A. Lindbergh witnessed
the landing of the daring French flyers
and then he said it all: "This is Capt.
.Coste’s day,” Col William Easterwood of
Texas has offered $25,000 cash prize for
a successful Paris-New York-Dallas flight.
Money makes the world go around and the
French conquerors of the air may be the
.winners of the Easterwood prize. They
succeeded where five of their country-
men lost their lives in mid-ocean. Now they
are ready for another flight, it is said,
from the heart of Texas to the royal city
- under the skies of France.
