were to keep or rising forever. There was
almost an apocalyptical character to these
prophecies and revelations.
We arc a little bit wiser now, apparently.

ly; and in that fact lies the one great bene-
fit which this extremely unpleasant depres-
sion is bringing.
It is impossible to make .much, progress
when you discount all obstacles in advance.
Success of any kind is only to be bad by
hard work and deep thought. Providence,
in its inscrutable wisdom, has not yet reach-

The possibilities of fire prevention were
demonstrated in a practical way in Cor-
vallis, Oregon, during the past summer.
This little city has one of the most effi-
cient fire, departments in the United States.
For years it has been required to an-
swer dozens of calls to put out grass and
rubbish fires each season. In order to cor-
rect this nuisance, the Chief of the depart-,
ment prevailed upon the city council to
pass an ordiance requiring a permit before
'grass and rubbish could be burned. The re-"
ulf was astonishing. Calls for this class
of fires were practically eliminated. " '
