ciation, as the main coordinat-
or of this program, has done a
remarkable job, Brown said.
The Texas Department of
Agriculture will continue to be
a factor in providing our
producers with the tools to
protect their crops from
destructive pests, and to
profitably produce a quality
product, he said. Abundant,
low cost food and fiber is a
luxury that the American
people have enjoyed and
become accustomed to for
many years. But we must
dedicate ourselves to balancing
the “agricultural equation!’
and putting back the vital
profit factor that is so often
missing from the equation,
Brown said.

Are we, silently and without
most Americans realizing it,
moving right into socialism?
Just what is a senior citizen?
We find senior means higher in
rank or longer in service and
citizen means an inhabitant of
a city or town, especially one
possessing civic rights, privi-
leges, and freedom. It does not
mean old, frail, senile, used
up, useless, obsolete, nor we
don’t need you anymore. In
proposed cuts on social
security and other helps for
our senoir citizens, are you not
saying, we are reverting to the
primative Indian custom,
saying to our seniors, “you’re
weak, can’t make the trip on
your own without help so we
are deserting you here and now
to die?
As George Washington has
said: “Few men have virtue to
withstand the highest bidder!’
Poverty, neglect, starvation,
and suffering is spoken of all
over the world but what about
the starving children and old
people here in America — the
land of plenty? What has
happened to the old adage
“charity begins at home”? As
Jonathan Swift has said

, Is Americanism, which

allowed the United States to
become the world’s food and
fiber leader. "For those of us
closely involved in food and
fiber production, the 'near
hysteria’ that often surrounds
the entire issue of agricultural
chemicals is deeply troubling.
Without pesticides, our home,
businesses, personal health —
indeed, our world — would be
very different,” he stated.
Food, feed and fiber
supplies would be reduced by
40 percent without modern
chemicals, Brown said. As
consumers, we would pay 60 to
80 percent more for food than
we do today. In fact, much of
the progress of modern
agriculture had come about
not because of higher market
prices, but because of
increased yields brought about
GIVE HER GOLD
If you're stumped for gifts this fall,
there's no substitute for real gold jewelry. Giv-
ing gold on any occasion makes it a special oc-
casion. It's bound to make a lasting impression
for that special birthday or anniversary.
Gold jewelry is the sensible splurge, for
the simplest piece is always elegant. Gold is
for always — it won't tarnish or lose its beauty
with the passing of time. Crafted of the most
precious of metals, gold jewelry is treasured
for its intrinsic value and its prestige, and has
been s,for thousands of years.
Real gold jewelry is a reflection of a
woman's taste — and her uncompromising
desire for quality. It doesn't give a woman
confidence, it shows she always has it. Gold
jewelry has become the trademark of the suc-
cessfuf woman, who insists on wearing the
“real thing" whenever and wherever she goes.
Tailored, versatile gold accessories suit her
busy lifestyle and are truly a "fashion invest-
ment" of lasting value and beauty.
“Some scientists have pre-
dicted that over the next three
decades, th worla will have to
produce as au."-"u have to
been produced since the
beginning of recorded history!’
Brown stated. “Already, a
Hiroshima of starvation occurs
on this planet every two days.
All signs point of the United
States playing an even greater
role in meeting the tremendous
worldwide demand for
food since we are one of the
very few nations on earth
which produces consistent
surpluses of agricultural com-
modities.
“The profitability and
continued success of the
American agriculture industry
in the years ahead will depend
more than ever on producti-
vity, efficiency, cost control
and sound management prac-
tices!’ he said. “There are
many obvious benefits to
integrated pest management,
but one of the most important
is in allowing producers to

Pointing out that “a
Hiroshima of starvation” oc-
curs worldwide every two days.
Agriculture Commissioner
Reagan V. Brown has
underscored the need for the
safe and effective use of
chemicals in agricultural pro-
duction. .
Brown’s remarks came in an
address to the Texas Pest
Management Association in
Corpus Christi, which co-
ordinates integrated pest
management (IPM) efforts in
Texas.
The integrated pest man-
agement program in Texas is
the first and best of its kind,
and the Envitomental Protect-
ion Agency’has designated
Texas’ program as a model for
“nothing is so hard for those
who abound in riches as to
conceive how others can be in
want!’
Quoting Alexander Anima-
tor, “It’s an appropriate
coincidence that the word
American ends in I Can”. Now s
what happens if we take away
the I CANS and leave A-Mer
nothing? Is this where we’re
going? When we no longer
have the I CAN in American it >
means “they can” and folks ij
that’s socialism.
It is true that America’s
health is poor and the
prescription for its recovery
lies in cuts, in government
spending on unnecessary
personnel, unnecessary sup-
port of illegitimate offspring,
unnecessary lavish expendi-
tures of elected officials from i
the President all the way down,
unnecessary programs to study
the sex life of an ant, or why a
frisbie flies and hundreds of
similar programs, the countless
million spent on illegal aliens,
the billions of dollars spent on
food stamps to individuals
driving big fine automobiles
and refusing to work for
anyone. This is to say nothing
of the billions being spent to
air condition, educate, enter-
tain, and to insure comforts
for all the prisoners of this
great land. Why can’t you tell
these people “Sorry the funds
have run out instead of telling
people who have worked, paid
taxes, raised families, fought J
in our wars, obeyed all laws,
and been good all around
citizens that social security,
which they have paid for, is
going broke.
Our President and Congress :
is to be commended for the ।
senior nutrition program
which has helped to keep our
senior citizens in the main
stream and with properly
operated programs has made
use of the experience and
expertise that seniors have to
offer. One of our greatest
needs in the area of this
nutrition program is the
removal of the grandfather
clause which now causes
money to be given where it is
not being used and depriving
areas who are serving far
above their given quota.
Lets consider a little soul
searching: Ask yourself what
the state of the country would
be if everyone in it behaved as
you do. To get at the right
answer requires a lof of study,
which, in turn, involves the
greatest stock — taking a man i
can get of himself.
I say all of this because I’m
proud to live in the “Land of
the free and the home of the
brave”. Let’s all, once again, be
Americans. To each of you, I
say, do not forget the I CAN
in your title — AMERICAN.
In farewell please remember
as you shake hands or talk with
your elected officials, this
parting thought, "a man of
words and not of deeds, is like
a garden full of weeds”.
