The kids enjoyed going to
those schools to read and write
and to recite, and the parents
enjoyed going to see their kids
perform usually on Friday
afternoons for spelling bees or
for Christmas and end-of-
school programs.
The kids and their parents
made the teachers the most
important persons in the
communities. The teachers
were encouraged to discipline
the kids, and they did.
Those teachers had to be
dedicated, for they worked
about six or seven months a
year for about $30 a month,
sometimes more, sometimes
less, and they had to “board
and room" in a home in the
community. And they were
expected to spend a night or
two each month in the home of
some of their pupils.
And those spelling bees that
usually came near the end of
Fridays, signifying the end of
the school week, sometimes
drew the parents much like
football games draw them
