Texas has always been
recognized as a leader in
agricultural production, and
ranching has been an integral
part of that success, Agricul-
ture Commissioner Reagan V.
Brown has reported.
And 1980 was no different
as the state led the nation in 15
major areas of livestock
production. Brown said.
In 1980, Texas led the nation
in: Cash receipts for all
livestock, $6.09 billion; cash
receipts from cattle and calves,
$4.87 billion; all cattle and
calves, 13.7 million head;
cattle slaughter, 5.79 million
head; cattle on feed, 1.83
million head; calves bom, 5.5
million head; number of farms
and ranches, 186,000; amount
of farm and ranch land, 138.8
million acres.
Texas also led last year in:

poor job of merchandising our
product in relation to our
competition. Who would
have thought ten years ago that
turkey and chicken would
make such marketplace gains!’
said Cecil Sellers, Sweetwater
(Texas) Auction Market man-
ager and president of the
Livestock Marketing Associa-
tion of Texas.
“We need to get something
going now more than ever!’
said Sellers, “and the way to
do it is by aggressively
promoting our product. That’s
why the Sweetwater market is
participating in the Texas beef
investment program!’
George McDonald, mana-
ger/owner of Longview Live-
stock Commission Inc. agrees
that now is the time to try a
new approach to return the
beef industry to profitability.
“We (cattlemen) can no
longer sit back and say that
this or that program may or
may not work. We should be
giving this new investment
program a try — we can’t sit
back and watch our market
share erode!’ McDonald said.
How will funds collected
from Texas cattlemen be used
by the Meat Board’s Beef
Industry Council?
For openers, the BIC has
earmarked a substantial por-
tion of funds for a fall media
blitz of its highly successful
“Make Ends Meat — With the
Great Taste of Beef” cam-
paign, which promotes lesser-
priced cuts of beef to
budget-conscious shoppers.
The campaign calls for
television advertising in six
major U.S. consumer markets.

Of the $9.96 billion in cash
receipts that Texas agriculture
brought into the state in 1980,
Brown pointed out, 61 percent
came from marketings of
livestock.
“The cattle industry alone
added almost $28 billion to the
state’s economy through cattle
production, feeding, meat
packing processing and retail-
ing!’ said Brown. “Texas has

Many low income house-
holds in the state containing at
least one person age 65 or older
will be eligible for a one-time
cash payment this summer to
help pay the costs of home
cooling.
Payment will range from $91
to $114 depending on
household size and income.
The Home Energy Assi-

summer cooling assistance is
federally funded and adminis-
tered by the Texas Department
of Human Resources (TDHR).
Last winter HEAP provided
heating assistance paymenu to
apply for HEAP summer
cooling payments during an
application period from Au-
gust 3 through August 31. A
face-to-face interview of a
household member or an
authorized representative is
required for certification, as is
verification of household
income.
The following guidelines can
be used in determining if a
household with at least one
member 65 or older is eligible
for HEAP assistance:
A household’s resources
cannot exceed $1,800 for one
person or $3,000 for more than
one person. The value of a
homestead, cars, personal and
household belongings are not
considered as resources.
Household gross monthly
income can be more than the
