used by medical researchers on
24 patients with arthritic knees
— and they reported astonish-
ing success.
“Every one of the 24 showed
an improved muscle strength,
freedom of movement and
increased speed in standing
up,” declared Dr. Peter
Utsinger, who headed the
medical team.
“They also averaged an
extra hour of sleep and cut
their doses of medication in
half. The therapy had no side
effects,” the researchers re-
ported.
Dr. Utsinger, head of
immunology at Germantown,
Pennsylvania, Hospital and
Medical Center, explained that
11-inch by 13-inch plastic bags
were filled with a quart of
ordinary tap water and six ice
cubes.
“Then,” he said,“when the
patients were seated comfort-
ably with the arthritic knee
extended, one bag was placed
on top of the knee and another
beneath it.”
The study was continued for
four weeks, he said, with
patients holding the ice packs
on their knees for 20-minute
stretches three times a day.
Altough Dr. Utsinger ‛s
study was done on rheumatoid
patients, the method can be
used by other arthritis
sufferers as well.
Dr. Frederic C. McDuffie of
the Arthritis Foundation des-
cribed the “kitchen cure” as a
“good idea". Cold is a good
pain reliever that decreases
inflamation," he said.
"People who have arthritic
hands or other joints should
try the method, too. Cold
therapy has the advantage of
being inexpensive and having
few, if any, side effects."

will make it possible to have
another fire fighting unit at an
expense between $700.00 and
$800.00, when a similar new
one would cost several
thousands dollars.
