Manure down on the farm
can now mean more than just a
mess. It can mean fuel and that
means money — money saved
and perhaps money earned —
and that’s good news for both
farmers and food-buying
urbanites.

ine, registered Sealy nick-
names. I’m not guaranteeing
ages and who-was-with-who in
school but the names are real.
Unfortunately, most of them
are not around Sealy any more
and a lot of them are not
around at all.
Is it my imagination, or are
nick-names just not as popular
or as widely used as they used
to be? I mean new ones. Do
kids and their parents hang
them on like they used to?
Maybe so, but if they do, I
wonder if they’re as creative as
some of the old ones were. I’ll
still put Kotchie, Shenkel and
Toot Toot up against the best
of ’em.
The interesting thing about
nick-names, naturally, is where
they came from in the first
place. During the times we’re
talking about, physical charac-
teristics were about as respon-
sible as anything else. Take for
example red hair. Maybe it was
because we didn’t have too
many true carrot tops around
that just a hint of red was likely
to make you a candidate for
the name. Red (Mel) Preibisch
and Red (Rudy) Engelking are
two that come to mind right
off-hand.
On the other hand, being left
handed didn’t guarantee that
you would be called Lefty.
Seems like being a ball player
helped, as in the case of Lefty
Garrett. I’m sure there were a
lot more around but their
names just don’t come to
mind. Left-handed, I mean.
Not Leftys, I most likely would
remember them. Same with not
being very tall. Stumpy John-
ston was one of the few size
related names and he passed it
on to his boy James in the form
of Little Stumpy only Little
Stumpy wasn’t very little.
Nick-names seemed to run in
families, too. Like the Hlu-
chans. We used to make a little
rhyme, “Eddie, Putty, Turk
and Woody!’ Eddie got by
with a short stint of Pancho
but Putty was still Putty up un-
til the time he was lost in
World War II. And nobody
I’ve talked to knows where the
name came from. Turk (that
was Freddie), had a sort of
skinny neck that would get real
red and sunburned in the sum-
mer, so Turk was just an ab-
breviation of turkey neck.
Woodrow had two. Woody
and Ouvvy. The first is under-
standable but Guwy is still a
mystery.
This has absolutely nothing
to do with names but some-
thing else about the Hluchan
boys that fascinated me was
they had garages for their

ANSWERline: There are sev-
eral ways. Avoid habits such
as smoking or excessive expo-

avoid excessively hot food or

Financial concerns of dual-
earner households must be
faced and dealt with so they
.don’t offset the family's
economic progress, advises
Linda McCormack, a family
resource management special-
ist on the economics staff of
the Texas Agricutlural Exten-
sion Service, the Texas A&M
University System. She says
dual-income households are
here to stay — with numerous
financial effects and problems.
One immediate effect is that
dual-earner families have
incomes 30-40 percent higher
;ihan one-earner families.
Dual-earner families also
have more expenses than
one-income families. Many
expenses are work-related,
including meals away from
home, child care, transporta-
tion, recreation, personal
grooming items, convenience
appliances, more services and
housing.
Time is limited for dual-
earner families due to
competing demands from the
job and family so these
families buy many goods and
^services to alleviate these time
itonstraints. Often this means
there is less time for
.“shopping" to evaluate com-
‘peting products before the
actual purchase, the specialist
continues.
P Making a financial plan will
help dual-income families
protect their incomes and
avoid financial dangers that
Can easily become reality in the
hectic pace of today's
lifestyles, McCormack says.
•First, it’s important to
realize that dual-income finan-
cial planning is different from
traditional single-income plan-
ning.
Couples may have the
feeling that two incomes allow
-them to buy anything and
everything they want, only to
-find out too late they don’t
have as much money as they
thought.
• A coordinated spending plan
should be of primary impor-
tance - with specific goods and
prices decided, the specialist
emphasizes.
Consider savings as an
essential part of the“expenses”
for any spending plan, since
dire financial consequences
may result if one income is
lost, either due to unemploy-
ment or health disability,
McCormack warns.
> A liquid cash reserve of
'three to six months salary
often is recommended as
the amount to keep on hand
for emergencies — both
planned and unplanned.
Failure to plan for emergen-
cies, such as car repairs, major
dental costs, taxes, uninsured
losses and unexpected medical
.costs frequently cause a
■financial crisis for many
families, the specialist adds.
■. Working couples are advised
io establish separate lines of
credit, with each partner
having a savings account and
separate charge cards - so
these conveniences are already
"‘in place” for each in case
the need for them arises,
McCormack says.
. In addition, with both
Spouses working, both are
likely to have company
benefits.
■ Check the types of coverage,
and fill in the gaps, if need be,
by purchasing additional life,
property or medical insurance.
• Dual incomes, plus infla-
tion, have pushed many
couples into tax brackets once
reserved for the rich, to say
nothing of the marriage
penalty and its special tax
rates, McCormack says.
To ease the tax burden,
dual-income partners should
seek experienced financial and
lege) counsel.
Estate planning is of great
importance to the working
couple, too, the specialist
stresses.

ftt - in banks, savings and

ENERGY PROJECTS
INCREASE STEADILY
Home improvements that
reduct heating and cooling
bills are gaining in popularity,
according to a study by the
Bureau of Building Marketing
Research (BBMR).
Last year, homeowners
spent an average of $294.75 on
energy-related home improve-
ments. This year, the average to
expected to increase to
$448.06, the BBMR says.
Those were the brand names of
Sears and Wards and if a kid
had a bicycle back then, it was
usually one of the other. I
always thought those garages
was a real keen idea but I never
got around to building one for
myself.
We had a Jockey Kunze,
too, Dean’s younger brother,
Willard. He was crazy about
horses and not being very big,
figured being a jockey would
be right down his alley. So he
wrote a letter to Lloyd
Gregory, sports editor of The
Houston Post, asking for ad-
vice on how to get to be one.
Gregory answered the letter in
his column and naturally every
kid in town saw it so Willard
was Jockey Kunze from then
on. Unfortunately he was
another of our war casualties
and never got any closer than
that.
If you hear Buddy Krampitz
called Deacon instead of Bud-
dy it’s because during high
school he took to wearing
white shirts, sleeves rolled
down and collar buttoned.
Somebody said he looked like
an old time church deacon.
The name stuck.
During my high school years
we had a janitor with four first
names. We called him Alpha-
bet Brandt. The three Vykou-
kal boys around then were
hardly ever called anything but
Vick - little Vick and Big
Vick. They sort of passed the
names up and down as they
went through. I still don't
know what Kooch Kucera's
real name is. And Windy Rem-
mert was Totsie a long time
before he was Windy. Maybe
he was windy then too but we
all called him Totsie anyway.
Buckeye (Louis James) Vi-
cenik came up with our kids
and I always figured the nick-
name had something to do with
maybe a tree in their yard. His
Mama, Mary, told.me it’s from
the Czech, boyka, or “little
boy!’ That’s what his Grandma
called him but his cousins,
Jerry and Ed Janda couldn't
handle Louis James, or boyka,
so they just settled for
Buckeye.
Suppose you needed some-
body to do some carpenter
work and painting and a friend
recommended Mutt and Dinky
Kveton. Would you know who
to look for in the phone book?
Mutt’s nick-name stuck so
good and tight that I believe
the only person I ever heard
call him by his real name,
Forest, was Mr. Armentrout
while he was still in high
school.
