MILWAUKEE, Aug. 24 (UP)
—Election of officers by rank and
file members of the United Auto-
mobile Workers of America in-
stead of by convention delegates
was offered today as a compro-
mise solution to end a bitter in-
ternal conflict, which has threat-
ened to split the second annual
UAW convention.
Ora Cassaway, one of John L.
Lewis’ chief lieutenants in the
United Mine Workers of Ameri-
ca, made the suggestion for rank
and file elections and urged mem-
ben to “save your fighting spirit
for future battles with employers."

A motorist who protested to
deputies that he was going to
file complaints against other dri-
vers was in jail Monday after-
noon with a charge of driving
while intoxicated filed against
himself.
The man, about 35, almost
literally drove into the county
jail. Deputies Frank Broadwater
and Tatum Brown Saturday night
were notified that an erratic dri-
ver was clogging traffic on the
square. He was at the wheel of
a new maroon pickup truck.
A* the deputies pursued the
man he swerved north on Van
Buren street and at the comer
of the county jail bounced against
the curbing. The officers halted
him there. His truck was parked
in front of the jail steps and he
was taken up the steps and lock-
ed up.
When officers first accosted
him, he indignantly said that he
would file complaints against
other motorists for bumping into
hl* truck.
