Posse Hunts for
Train Mail Robbers
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (ZP)
—A 20th century version of an
old west mail train robbery was
enacted yesterday in Little Horse
Thief canyon.
A posse of 50 sheriff’s deputies
grimly set out after two men
seen tossing mail sacks off a
rain. Eauipped with walkie-
talkie radios, the posse was di-
rected by a plane overhead. Two
deputies road a railroad hand
car up and down the Santa Fe
tracks.
When the law flushed its
quarry, the two unarmed men of-
fered no resistance. Booked on
suspicion of mail theft were

Pat Tolar, Thomas Jefferson
High school football star, has

Tolar made the announcement

Tolar is a football, basketball,
track and swimming star and he
said the baseball possibilities at
Texas might have had something
to do with deciding to go there.

Eagles Stop Cats
in Double Header
By CHARLEY ESKEW
Associated Press Sports Writer
With Don Mossi working from
the left and Dave Hoskins from
the right, the Dallas Eagles high-
iowed the first-place drive of
Fort Worth Thursday night in
the Texas league.
Fort Worth didn’t get a run
for its money; Mossi’s seven in-
nings of southpawing enabled
Dallas to take the first game of
a double-bill. 2-0, and Hoskins
on a three-hitter stopped the
Cats by the same score in the
long game. All of which left Fort
Worth four games off the pace
with 11 left.
Righthander Hoskins, the
league’s first Negro player, also
became this year’s first 20-game
winner. The three-hit twirling
was his second straight of such
stinginess. He had yielded only
eight hits in his last three out-
inas, all victories.
Good mound work also kev-
noted Oklahoma City’s playoff
henth efforts, netting tha Indians
a double triumph over Tulsa, 3-1
and 4-0. Combined with the two
Dallas shutouts, Al Gerheauser’s
night cap triumph for Oklahoma
Citv made the league’s shutout
total 127 this year.
In the other games Shreveport
took over fourth place without
dispute by slamming Houston,
10-3, and Beaumont mowed
down San Antonio 8-5.
Dallas Texans Set
For Test Tonight
Against Pro Club
ODESSA, Aug. 29 (A) — The
Dallas Texans, newest members
of the National Football league,
get their acid test tonight. They
play their first game against a
member of the league—the Phil-
adelphia Eagles.
Holding victories over two
service teams, the Texans will,
in the words of Coach Jimmy
Phelan, “find out if they can go
in pro company.”
Adrian Burk, the former Bay-
lor passing star, will be piloting
the Eagles.
A crowd of 18,000 is expected
to see the first professional foot-
ball game ever played in this
city.
Philadelphia will be playing
its third exhibition game against
NFL members. They battled the.
Pittsburgh Steelers to a score-
less tie and lost to the Detroit
Lions,' 7-3, in their ether appear-
ances. Dallas beat Brooke Army
Medical center, 34-7, and Cars-
well Air Force base, 27-0.
The Texans cut their roster to
45 this week when End Art
Weiner was placed on the re-
serve list and waivers were
asked on Billy Jack Roberson,
former Stephen F. Austin col-
lege tackle, and Howard Du
Bois, ex-Nebraska Wesleyan
guard, who had been signed as
a free agent.
Top Match Today
Bill Neely captured the cham-
pionship in the junior division
of the Gainesville Invitational
Tennis tournament Thursday
evening by outclassing K. Lil-
lard.
Neely took the match in
straight sets 6-2, 8-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Play in the senior bracket ad-
vanced to the semifinal round as
Charles Gilmer beat D e r y l
Barnes 6-1, 6-4; Ed Rogers
stopped John Hurley 6-0, 6-2;
and Joe Gossett eliminated Bill
Rudd 6-3, 6-1.
Wide interest is being shown
in a match slated for 7:30 p. m.
today between Gossett and Rog-
ers. Both have played outstand-
ing tennis throughout the tourna-
ment. Gossett is top seeded ’
along with James Hanry in the
meet, while Rogers is considered
a strong dark horse possibility
for the title. Rogers was net
champion of Fort Myers, Fla.,
high school for three years and
champ of Spartanburg, S. C.,
junior college for two seasons.
He is local manager of S. H.
Kress and company.
Gossett, local warehouse fore-
man for Sinclair Oil company, is
a former four year champion of
Taylor high school.
Charles Gilmer will -umpire
the feature match.
Gilmer will meet James Hanry
Saturday night in another semi-
finals match.
Finals in the tourney have
been tentatively set for Sunday
evening on- the high school
courts.
