Republic Steel Corp, joined six other firms AAonday who earlier
announced a 6 percent price increase on steel used in consumer
products effective Dec. 1.
The race for Senate majority leader tightened as Hubert
Humphrey picked up George McGovern's endorsement and
claimed to be only two votes behind the leader, Robert Byrd.
Ernest Hollings of South Carolina is also in the running for the
Jan. 4 election.
Malcolm Toon, current U. S. ambassador to Israel, will be the
next ambassador to the Soviet Union, despite Russian objec-
tions to him.

New UT basketball coach Abe Lemons handed Longhorn fans
a season-opening thriller. The Horns squeaked by Oklahoma
State in a 74-73 overtime victory Monday night.
SWC newcomer University of Houston will host the 1977 Cot-
ton Bowl January 1. The Cougars, after a decisive 42-20 con-
quest of Rice, will face Maryland on New Year's Day in Dallas.
After the Arkansas game Saturday, the finale of a disappoin-
ting season," UT's Darrell Royal may resign as head football
coach and concentrate on the UT athletic directorship. No of-
ficial announcement has been made as yet.
Houston Oilers ended a six-game losing streak with a 20-14
victory over the Atlanta Falcons Sunday.

The top-ranking student of Stephen F. Austin University's fall
graduating class has never seen the campus and has no cor-
porate job waiting for him. Thomas W. Matthews, 25, is current-
ly serving a life sentence for murder in the Texas Department
of Corrections at Huntsville. Matthews will receive his B.A. in
applied arts and sciences with a perfect 4.0 average and says he
hopes to make a fresh start someday.

Some concerned citizens of Georgetown have begun
to circulate petitions seeking an election to.review
Georgetown’s local option concerning the sale of beer
and wine. If the petitioning effort is successful, the
election wilt probably be held in late January or early
February of next year. Jn order to vote in the election,
you must be resistered to vote in Williamson County,
and you must register at least 30 days before the

election. To change voter registration from your home
county to Williamson County requires only a short trip
to the County Clerk’s office at the Courthouse. The
simple step of changing your registration to Williamson
County will give you, the Southwestern student, the
voice you deserve in deciding this and other local

Mexican landowners and leaders of poor farm workers
agreed to a temporary truce Friday that will allow for a
peaceful transition in government;. The inauguration for new
president Jose Lopez Portilo, was Wednesday. Dignitaries
attending from the U. S. were Secretary of State Henry
Kissinger, Rosalynn Carter, Lady Bird Johnson and Jack Ford.
A blizzard hit earthquake-shattered eastern Turkey Sunday.
All residents of the capital, Muradiye, who are between the
ages of 18 and 65 were drafted to help with the rescue efforts.
Between 3500-4000 had already died; those who survived the
quake may have frozen to death.
The earth is cooling down and should have another ice age in
a few thousand years. According to a study.by scientists from
Columbia, Brown, and Cambridge universities, the ice ages are
caused by variations in the earth's orbits around the sun.

CIA director George Bush announced he will resign Jan. 20,
the day President Ford leaves offce. Bush, one of several top
government officials who announced their resignations after
Jimmy Carter's November win, replaced former director •
William Colby last January when the CIA was under heavy
criticism from Congress and the press.
Bert Lance, expected to become Carter's budget director or
to fill another high post, says he believes the government should
have good relations with business and does not favor wage-
price controls. Lance is a Georgia banker who helped Carter re-
organize that state's government.
Pcesident-elect Jimmy Carter said he has made personal or
indirect contact with most of the nation's major steel com-
panies in an effort to persuade them to roll back announced
price hikes.
