THE FIRST PITCH — Southwestern University President Durwood Fleming
shows good form as he throws out the first ball to start SU's baseball season in
Georgetown Wednesday. The Pirates responded by blasting Southwest Texas State

Southwestern University's running
Bucs used their quickness to advantage
to beat East Texas Baptist 97-67 here
Thursday and clinch a place in the
NAIA basketball playoffs.
The win dolldified second place in the
Big State Conference for the Pirates
regardless of Saturday's outcome with
Mary Hardin-Baylor In the regular
season finale.
That means Southwestern will play
the winner of the Lone Star Conference
Tournament being held in Huntsville
Saturday through Monday.
The Pirates will play the winner of
that tourney on the LSC winner's
homecourt Saturday, February 28,
while BSC leader St. Mary’s plays
either Howard Payne, the LSC regular
conference winner, or the second place
finisher in the LSC tournament, should
HPU win the tourney. That game will
be in San Antonio.
Winners of the two games February
28 then meet March 3 on the homecourt
of the St. Mary's game winner to deter-
mine who gets to travel to Kansas City
for the NAIA National Tournament.
"But first, we want to beat Mary
Hardin-Baylor and close out our
regular season on a good note," says
SU coach Paul Peak.
Southwestern defeated Mary Har-
din-Baylor 96-64 here in the first half of
league play, but Peak noted that the
Crusaders have been improving and
played tough Huston-Tillotson close in
losing 81-77 Thursday.
Southwestern had its hands full with
East Texas Baptist in the early going
as ETBC caught and passed the Pirates
to take a 20-16 lead midway through the
first half.
But Jon Smith and Curtis Vick came
off the bench to combine with a red-hot
Rocky Rawls for a series of steals,
some spectacular assists, and some
crucial baskets to put Southwestern
into a 21-point lead 10 minutes later.

with 62 percent from the field.
Thompson leads In field goal percen-
tage with 87 percent and in assists with

novers while SU lost the ball only four
times.
Fouls were even with ETBC com-
miting 18 and SU 17, but the EasTex-
ans' fouls, including one technical,
came early enough to give SU the one-
and-one option fairly early in both
quarters. Southwestern hit 21-of-26
from the foul line to ll-of-16 for the
visitors.
Rudy Williams had a spectacular
night in the early going, scoring all of
his 22 points in the first half, including

the second half as Peak cleared his
bench.

for Southwestern as the scholarly-
looking guard popped in 6-of 8 long
jumpers, several during the critical
close periods of the game, to go with 2-
for-2 at the foul line, eight assists and
three rebounds.--—---- —----—
Peak was also high in praise of
Smith, "who did an exceptional job on
defense with five steals," and Vick,
who had 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6
at the line with three rebounds.
SU guard Mike Thompson had a
typically strong game with 16 points
